George M. Elder, retired stationary engineer, died yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. G. L. Scanling, 5741 N. Michigan Road. A native of Perry County, Ohio, Mr. Elder came to Indianapolis in 1885. He was 83 and formerly was associated with his sons in the wholesale florist business *in California. His wife, Mrs. Sarah Alameda Elder, died in 1910. Survivors include three other daughters, Mrs. Lucy C. Patterson and Mrs. E. D. Kaylor, both of Indianapolis, and Mrs. George Rohrer of Carmel; five sons, Len, Russell and Marion Elder, all of Indian-

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Sept. 16 (U. P.).—A 17-year-old Chicago girl told police today she didn’t want t6 go back to the home she left Sept. “because my mother ‘stabbed me with an icepick and beat me with
a hammer.” Bloomington police picked up the girl yesterday at the request of Chicago autherities, who they said were expected to come after her. In her jail cell, the girl said her mother refused to let her go out a night except to church meetings and beat her when she disobeyed. She éxhibited bruises on her head and shoulders and a mark on her chest which she said was from an icepick. “I haven't done anything wrong,” she said. “I still love my mother, but I don’t want to go home.”

WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 (U. P.).—Retail merchants started helping Uncle Sam sell defense savings ‘stamps today, but pre--ferred . blonds instead of 1776.
