instead of the flossy yacht expec of his position. : . “Been ‘thinking over my proposition, son?” the Skipper said casu-

ally to the slim, wiry youth stand-| ing near on the aft deck, his mild

blues eyes squinting against the sun. pe ia “I know the setup. If you marry . Olivia you'll take over this vessel shortly after the ceremony. Olivia is determined to have a romantic honeymoon, sail the Falcon down to the Galapagos or somewhere!” Herbert frowned. “But, sir, I— uh—I don’t know anything about navigation. ranged—at least, I mean I had intended -that we would take our honeymoon trip later. I have some rather ' interesting and important experiments to make on my new aviation gas research before I have a vacation!” : The Skipper groaned. “There speaks the voice of inexperience!” he glumly stated. “It will take a courageous man to wed Olivia— and handle her!” , ‘ . The future bride came to her

father on the third day of the! §

. cruise. Her intelligent, pretty f

was a ‘mask that hid the frustra-

tion her eyes revealed.

“I gave the idea to Herbert] |

straight, Skipper,” she said right from the shoulder. “I told him

what we'd dp as soon as we were| [8

married. About the Falcon.” “I hope he measures up to your . standards, daweghter!” ® ” ” OLIVIA LOOKED HIM in the "eye. She was ominously softspoken.

“You needn’t have any qualms i

about the poor darling,” she sald slowly, “because he isn't going along. The marriage is off, definitely and eternally. He just informed me, very coldly and politely, that he intended to keep on with his

precious experiments as soon as we |

reached port!” . “Oh, I see. Tough luck, kid!” The Skipper said clumsily. Herbert must be pretty dumb, or at least reckJess, to put his foot down so unequivocally with Olivia. Lord, he hadn’t been able to do ‘it himself since the little tyrant had been able to talk! He'd set the foolish young man ashore, regretfully, and keep on with the cruise. He'd hate doing it. Herbert was a clean, fine

boy. : “Put into port? What for?” Olivia demanded threateningly. when he mentioned the thought. We'll keep right on as we started, without the marriage, of course. We'll put the little student ashore as per schedule! I'll show him!” , The Skipper knew that it was tiseless to argue. . “You've put your foot into it, son, but you're over 21, and supposedly able to.do your own- ,” he told the young chemist later, trying to be friendly and ease the disappointment the boy must naturally feel. “I rather ‘think you'd have made a good son-in-law, too. But we won't cry over it. When will I set you ashore? Any special place?”

HERBERT LOOKED * surprised. “Why, I'm going along with you as we all planned. Olivia will get over

her frustrated feeling soon enough, |

don’t worry.” ! ; “¥ou mean . . . you actually de- ~ fled Olivia intentionally? That you intended to make ‘her do things your way?” ra . “Women haven't changed much inside ‘Since the caveman whacked his captive over the cerebellum with a mastodon’s leghone and carried her off to his cave as his mate,” Herbert said without any change of expression. “What kind of regard would Olivia have if I let her step all over me before -we got fairly started? And, as I said; I can’t sail. I have important work to do!”

“Well, I'm dashed!” The Skipper

said reverently.

“You may as well get in shape to !

do that father-down-the-aisle stuff -as agreed,” Herbert declared confidentially, “I'm going into seclu-

sion for the duration—and work on] ’

_be around p me before day after tomorrow. And now, excuse me. Ym busy!” = - “Yes sir!” The Skipper said auto-

matically. It wasn’t until he had|
