mediate housing for defense workers by repairing and remodeling suitable old dwellings is being launched here and in all other defense -areas. Calling on property owners to “Repair for Defense” the program has the joint support of the building and allied industries, financial institutions, building material manufacturers and dealers, trade and civic bodies and the Federal Housing Administration. R. Earl Peters, FHA director for Indiana, calls the program “an essential part of the nation’s defense housing effort. The broad national policy is to make gertain that every worker g duties vital to the defense of the country shall have adequate living quarters which measure up to the American standard of living.” “New homes are needed in all localities engaged in defense work but it takes time to build a new home—and often an entirely new neighborhood to go with it. Remodeled and converted old dwellings are needed to fill the gap.” The program, as outlined by Mr. Peters, is aimed to: Provide, as quickly as possible, urgently needed housing for defense workers by repairing and remodeling suitable existing property. Save valuable time in furthering the defense effort. Conserve vital and strategic materials, Give first place in the field of consumer credit to more worthwhile and lasting property improvements, rather than to non-essentials.
