or WILLIAM PHILIP SIMMS. ‘Times Foreign Editor

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11. — Despite the. magnificent stand of

vaders, there -continues to be considerable grave uncertainty and anxiety here over the situation in | the Soviet Union. The anxiety is due chiefly to two , factors over which neither ‘W. nor London feels f that it has “much control. ‘One cause ‘of uneasiness undoubtedly is the vague and often conflicting: nature: of the information com-

sia, + The! other Mr. Simms has to do with Russia's admittedly growing dissatisfaction over the aid, or lack of aid, from Britain and the United States. ‘True, the. Moscow. communiques continue to be: optimistic. Placenames on. the map: around which fighting. is reported give ‘the impression that the Axis is either| being stopped in his ‘tracks or thrown back with ‘heavier losses in| men and materiel than’ are being suffered by the defenders.

Position Reported Grave

On the other hand, it is reported from London that Premier Stalin had informed Sir Stafford Cripps, British ambassador to Moscow, that Russia's position is “grave” and had intimated -that unless more and speedier help reaches the Soviets from Britain and the United States, certain “military eventualities” may become necessary. Just what these “military might be was not stated. Presumably - they would have to do with new defensive arrangements, inasmuch‘ as Stalin is said to have reiterated his intention not to. conclude any - separate peace or armistice with the Axis. What worries Washington is that, however much: this country or Britain desires to extend help, there is a very definite limit to what they can do. ; Britain herself is more and more dependent upon the United States and for one reason or another—the exact reason, at this moment, makes little difference—even aid to Britain is rather tardy in developing.

Officials Bewildered

Mixed with this worry is no little bewilderment. If official figures from Moscow are anywhere near correct, observers find it difficult to believe that Stalin could paint the Russian picture in such dark colors. - The latest: Moscow figures of a general and inclusive nature covering the first two months of the war

| purported to reveal that the Axis

powers lost some 2,000,000 men, 10,000 guns, 8000 tanks and 7200 planes, against Russian losses of only 700,000 men, 7500 guns, 5500 tanks and 4500 planes. -Russia’s population is more than double that of Germany. Before

It would seem, therefore, that she should. be able to slug it ; the Nazis, losing man for

Officials here, however, a inclined to hold Moscow to! the exact ‘figures announced. in muniques. That would be unfair. Communiques are for: home, and sometimes . foreign, consumption, whether issued by ihe. Soviet ‘Union or any. other coun ; But if this we 1s to go into partnership, so. os ‘speak, with the Soviet. Union in : the ' business of crushing Hitler, officials would like to have the real lowdown on who's who and what's what in that vast domain, - : Harry Hopkins, lend-lease administrator, 1s said to have been assured by Stalin himself that Russia can and will hold through the coming winter. But Soviet ‘spokesmen in. Moscow and elsewhere are calling ‘for more

and more aid with increasing per- |

sistence—aid which can not possibly materialize before October, for the

same reason ‘that blood can not be|
