The intrinsic merit of Orson Welles’ first effort for Hol lywood, however, still stands. Having seen the film twice, I feel no hesitation in saying that it is a great accomplishment. - ‘Of course, there have been a few dissenters in this appraisal, Otis Ferguson among them, and they all have made some rigid points. Still, the majority of those in the trade feel that “Citizen Kane” is the most adult screen entertainment to come out of Hollywood since anybody’s grandfather was an infant. It is the life story of a great
“newspaper ‘publisher (Hearst, no
doubt). As the writer, director, producer and star, Mr. Welles does a superb job. And the photography, by Gregg Toland(“Grapes of Wrath,” “The Long Voyage Home” and “Dead End”), is perhaps the most unique you will have seen. All this, no doubt, you have read before now. But it’s still true. There is a great question whether “Citizen Kane” ever will enjoy an outstanding box office. In fact, it may have only an average run for Mr. Welles’ supe porting cast contains no “big” movie names and the story is not cut out for wide appeal. But my recommendation to you is to see this picture, for it may possibly mark a new era in movie making. Doubtful though. The idea is that you'll live if you don’t see it, but you'll have a lot to remember if you do. And try to get in on the start of the picture, for you might find it confusing should you come in late. 8 # 8
Race Is On
"AT LOEW'S will be another outstanding film, “Here ' Comes Mr. Jordan.” It undoubtedly will run a race yith “Citizen Kane” for box office honors of the week. Starring Robert Montgomery, as a prize-fighter who dies too soon ‘gnd so is reincarnated, “Mr. Jordan” has drawn critical praises from even the most soured reviewers. This is pure comedy, directed with a reportedly deft touch by Alexander Hall. It’s designed as a surprise movie, and so there need be no more said now than that Mr. Montgomery is a title-contending boxer: who is killed in a plane crash. The powers above calculate that he’s got his’'n too soon and so they send him back to
- earth, but in a different body—
for his had been cremated by Manager Jimmy Gleason. It’s not the “usual sort of thing,” you see.

‘ Ridin' and Shootin’
FOR VARIETY'S sake, it nothing else, the Circle will show “Bad Men of Missouri,” the story of Cass County's’ famous Younger brothers, with whom, it is said, Jesse James got his start. These were three young men who, returning from the Civil War, found that Missouri farm. ers, their own father included, were being over-riddem by skinflint bankers wi were buying up tax warrants and dispossessing land owners. There were Cole (Dennis Morgan), Bob (Wayne Morris) and Jim (Arthur Kennedy). Legend has it that they rode the Missouri plains, plundering and then giving to oppressed farmers. But finally they were trapped in the holdup of a Northfield, Minn. bank. Bob was so badly wounded that they decided to give in. And here the film story ends. Warners’ - however, found that: 1. Bob died in prison after 16 years, a semiinvalid. . 2.- Jim was paroled after 20 years, but was unable to marry Mary Hathaway (Jane Wyman). who had waited for him, because he had been declared legally dead because of an original life sentence. ; 3. Cole was paroled after 25. years and died in 1916 after leading an exemplary lif This might be hats known in the trade as a “sleeper.” ~~
