HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 10 (U. P)—| #3

In these times you can pick up aj: pretty good argument in Hollywood | :

by suggesting either that the movies should—or shouldn’t—devote: themselves to pure entertainment and quit focusing on the international situation, Here is the side of the argument which contends entertainment in itself is plenty, as presented by Everett Riskin, producer, and Dick Powell, actor. “I do not believe, ” said Mr. Riskin, “that audiences slide their 25 and 50-cent pieces through the cashier’s window to see a rehash of the news they have been reading in the papers. They want to be e tained; they want to laugh; they want to escape from the ‘war of nerves’ that is plaguing every one of us today.”

For his new film role Charles Laughton eperie five weeks in bed.

Produces Comedies

Mr. Riskin practices what he preaches. His latest production is the fantastic comedy, “Here Comes Mr. Jordan,” starring Robert Montgomery. Previous pictures, all comedies, include “One Night of Love,” “Theodora Goes Wild,” and “The Awful Truth.” All were successes at the box office, too. He is preparing another comedy, “Mr. Twilight,” starring Cary Grant. Mr. Powell agrees with Mr. Riskin. Pictures, he believes, should stay away from controversial topics and actors and actresses should refrain from voicing weighty opinions ‘regarding them.

Other Kind Defended

“If Hollywood actors would stick to their own business, that is, entertaining the public,” he said, “everyone would be a lot happier. And, Hollywood would not be on the receiving end of so many criticisms.”

VOICE from the Balcony by FREMONT POWER

MAYBE YOU REMEMBER THAT wild, high cry from the motion picture industry not so long ago that business was terrible, awful— it shouldn’t occur to a cur. The principal moaning was that with defense money rolling about the country like sand, movies were not getting their share. Just why they weren't, no one-professed to know, exactly. But some tried to find out and among those elements was the Film Daily, the motion picture trade paper.
