Lots of Calories Build Up Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md., Sept. 10 (U. P.).—The first women ever to see the inside of the Naval Academy’s mess hall are convinced that Uncle Sam’s future naval officers eat more ice cream and are as well or better fed than any comparable group of young men in the world. A group of newspaperwomen, at the invitation of the Navy Department, visited the Academy yesterday. They toured the grounds, visited Bancroft Hall, largest single dormitory unit in the world, and inspected a U. S. destroyer anchored in the Severn River just off the Academy. But the chief interest was food and there was plenty of it. Officers said the 3000-odd midshipmen daily consume approximately 300 pounds of potatoes, 3200 pounds of bread, 600 piec, 6000 doughnuts, and gallons of coffee. Each week, they said, some 10,000 pounds of beef are eaten, along with 2000 pounds of veal and lamb and 22,000 pounds of chicken—mostly fried. But ice cream seems to be the sailors’ favorite dish, especially if its good, rich chocolate. A pecial ice’ créeam room adjoining the mess hall provides 120 gallons for each meal—and its served five times a week. It costs the navy department about $67,500 each month: to feed .
' the midshipmen.

. [THREE AUTOISTS TOUR AMERICAS
Drive All Way to Southern Tip of Chile in Stock 1941 Model Car.
BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 10 (U. P.). —Three Americans, ' Sullivan C.
Richardson of Detroit and Arnold Whitaker and Kenneth C. Van Hee,
mobile trip from Detroit to the southern point of Chile and thence to Buenos Aires. The entire distance was traveled by land except for about 600 miles. It was necessary to resort to water travel to pass the jungles and swamps in southern Costa Rica and southern Panama, and to cross the gulf of Tuayaquil from Ecuador to Talara, Peru. The party will leave to drive to Lima, Peru, tomorrow, and will embark at Callao on the Grace liner Santa Clara, arriving in New York about Oct. 20. The trip was made in a 1941 stock amodel Plymouth car. Richardson said they had no blowouts during the entire trip, although the car wore out six tires, two clutches, two transmission gears and two steering spindles. Although the travelers were stung by mosquitos in 14 countries they arrived from Punta Arenas, southernmost city of the world, in perfect health. The party had no accidents although the car on one occasion teetered on -the edge of a cliff in
‘Mexico, and in southern Mexico it
took them 25 days to travel 50 miles, with the aid of 15 men using a block and tackle to extricate the car from mud. Richardson expressed belief that the Costa Rican and Panama for-
ests and swamp lands never will be
made passable for motorists. He said, however, that motorists from the United States should be able to drive to the Panama Canal within
rate of construction of the PanAmerican Highway. x
