Makes Gasoline From Vegetables

NEW YORK, Sept. 9 (U. P)— American scientists have perfected a method of extracting gasoline and other petroleum’ products from vegetables. Dr. Ernst Berl of Carnegie In-

stitute of Technology, in an interview in the September issue of Esquire magazine, declared that farm crops, through photosynthesis, manufacture naturally in the form of sucrosse and cellulose all the carbohydrates needed for the production of oil. “The , world’s crops for three years,”hhe said, “would give us the equivalent of all the oil reserves we have under the earth.” Dr. Berl explained that the whole natural process of forming oil, as well as coal, can be reproduced on a smaller but more rapid scale in the laboratory. He admitted that gasoline cannot yet be produced from farm crops anc waste at a price competitative with present costs but asserted that the future may “virtually change existing economic conditions so that the Berl processes may be entirly suitable for countries poor in hydrocarbons but rich in flora.” .

PIPELINE CHEAPER THAN TANK CARS

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (U.P) .— Deputy Oil Co-ordinator Ralph K. Davies said today that the cost of

moving oil by pipe line is so much cheaper than by tank car that a pipe line from Texas to Bayonne, N. J., could be paid for out of one year’s savings. He told Senator Sheridan Downey (D. Cal.) in a letter that it would cost about $207,000 to transport 200,000 barrels of oil daily to the East Coast in tank cars, BY pipe line, ‘he said, it would cost only $67,000 a day. Over a year the costs of pipe line operation would be - $75,000,000 cheaper, he said, or approximately equal to the estimated cost of the new pipe line, $80,000,000. Mr. Davies is scheduled to appear today before the Senate Committee investigating the East Coast gasoline shortage as the new Supply Priorities and Allocations. Board meets to consider whether to grant priority ratings for between 400,000 and 750,000 tons eof steel plants for the Texas-Bayone pipe line. Surveys of idle tank car capacity and the possibility of constructing concrete, reinforced barges to haul petroleum products also will be considered, officials said. SPAB can not directly halt constryction of the pipe line, but refusal to'grant priority assistance on materials would make building impossible. Informed sources believed - that SPAB would reject the pipe line plan at this time on the grounds that present. steel plant productive capacity is critically needed to provide plates for the shipbuilding and tank programs.
