LONG CHANCE

By WADE WYLIE

SENOR FRANCISCO HERMANEZ sat as usual at the little -table at the rear of his night club floor and complacently watched the afternoon sunlight filtering through the heavy drapes of the windows and spilling little pools of molten sunlight on the tiny dance floor before the orchestra dais. As he expected, Jose Cantada and Manrico Cuerpo arrived soon. . “This aftefnoon call, Francisco,” Jose demanded peevishly, “what does it mean? I do not make the get up until midday. Then you telephone for me to come right away!” Jose was tall, Latin and handsome, the club’s master of ceremonies. “And I—I make it a habit, Francisco, to rehearse in the afternoon. My mozos in the orchestra, they

is of importance, no?” Francisco smiled and motioned them to chairs with a pudgy manicured hand." “You will forget your little troubles, senores, if you please. I, too, have troubles. This place I have called La Motacila, which is in other words. The Bluebird. Do you see any bluebirds here any more, the birds of happiness?”

JOSE AND MANRICO exchanged

wary glances. They remained silent and Francisco grunted to himself and shrugged. “T have thought of this for many weeks, senores. I have seen that you two are jealous, one with another. And why? Because Jose is well received for his singing, his wise jokes to our patrons. Because Manrico takes an extra bow for himself when the orchestra is applauded. This is foolishness!” “Foolishness to you, perhaps, but we are artists,” Jose remonstrated with a sweeping gesture. Maybe you think we are un poco loco, a small bit erazy. That is because you

Francisco!” “That may be as it may be,” the cafe owner agreed with a ready smile, “In Spain they say, ‘Anoche todos los gatos son grisos,’ and that means only that at night all cats

be gray, but not Delores, whom I have brought to dance the Spanish dance!” “Ah!” Jose said, interested. “She is pretty?” “Ah!” Manrico echoed. “That is what I have needed all along. A young girl for whom to play. from my heart, to make the music—not a - conceited somebody like this Jose!”

Ah!” Francisco re-echoed, smil-}

ing wisely. “Such a beauty I would not remember having seen before! She will put you two to shame, since she is a true artiste. However, that is of small concern to me. The world is full of bad singers and maestroes!” “Si?” Jose and Manrico demanded together truculently. “Sil” Prancisco said staunchly, “Yery, very full!” > 2 2 z

WITH THE COMING of Dolores to grace the spotlighted dance floor during the evening floor shows, La Motacila seemed to take on new life. Francisco sat at his little table quite alone and blandly watched the little by-plays bétween Jose and Dolores, between Manrico and Dolores. Jose wrote out for himself now, every night, a pretty little sequence of bright and witty things to say to introduce the mediocre acts, and even carefully memorized it. His best speech was always reserved for

“WE HAVE COME fo you as a referee, Francisco,” the two appealed to the owner after a certain while had passed in this fashion. “As an old and trusted friend, we wish you to decide which of us is the best man to ask for Dolores’ hand!” ; “You bring no surprises, senores,” Francisco admitted with his old good nature. “But why must you spoil things, eh? You, Jose, have proved yourself an artist because of your hard work to please Dolores, no?” : “That is so, amigo,” the singer agreed doubtfully. . “And you, Manrico, have you not made of your orchestra one of the finest in the city, where before it was just one of many not so good

ones, and all because of Dolores?” “You speak the truth, certainly,” Manrico said unhappily. “But there is one more reward I would wish as the fruit of all my labors, and) you know what that is!” “Yes, you two. I know. But there is one little thing I have perhaps not remembered to mention, and that is that Dolores Is my own little sister, no?” Francisco queried with a deprecating shrug. “And also, already I have arranged for her marriage with a nice, handsome sugar planter from Cuba!” Tomorrow—Three years is too long to wait for any man—except Hal. “Crib-Age Game,” by Mary Drake. :

Dolores, of course. He devoured her with an ardent glance, and his own songs he dedicated to her with his warm glances. Francisco enjoyed this. The arrogant Jose took on. even more arrogance under Dolores" eyes, but he worked harder. He even wrote new

good. He became popular all’ over again with the patrons and brought in many new ones. Manrico -could not endure being placed very long at a disadvantage. As the leader of the orchestra which must play all the music for the dancing of Dolores, he had an excellent opportunity to put himself in her good graces. He spent long hours ferreting out traditional and half-forgotten Spanish folk music and rewriting it for his orchestra.
