Willys to Use Same: Dies
TO CONSERVE LABOR and machine tools needed ‘for arms production, the nation’s lowest-priced full-sized 1942 car—Willys-Overland’s Americar—will use thé same body stamping dies as for 1941 models. Civilian aluminum consumption is cut by the company’s development of longer-lasting iron alloy pistons. New engine heat refinements, engineers say, will cut fuel consumption.
Wheel base and tire size are the same as.in 1941, Improved steering and insulation betters handling qualities and comfort, the company says. Willys engineers point out that defense metals are saved by using enamel instead of chrome plating where parts are not open to} weather. The Americar uses approximately one-third less iron, steel and rubber than the average of the four Iargest-selling cars on the market, they say. ” » us

Bathtubs and Glued Houses
IF THE WAR CONTINUES and existing shortages of certain materials become ‘more acute, you're likely to be living in a house that’s glued together and take baths in a wooden tub, : ‘While, you ‘many not think now that youd like them, Albert C.
Schweizer, head of the New York believes you probably would. “Wars still affect architecture, though not as they did in the Middle Ages when every fellow’s house was a fortress,” Mr. Schweizer says. ; “In the last war the airplane was developed. ® Airplane’ design was carried over into everything—automobiles, houses, furnishings and gadgets. It made possible the universal ‘stre we hear so much about today and the modern styles in archifecture and furniture. “In this war the shortages of materials are bound to control architecture; to force the architect to design and the public to accept entirely new methods and materials.” The shortage of metal for nails, Mr. Schweizer says, may result -in widespread use of houses made of prefabricated sections of plywood, glued together. The glue would be very strong and perfectly weatherproof so that you wouldn’t have to climb out of bed on a rainy night to stick the roof back on. Stainless steel and chromium trim on modern houses will go, he believes, and plastics may .be used
before a shortage develops in them. |
oa 2 8 The shortage of skilled labor also will be felt, he says, and will further encourage development of the - prefabricated house because they can be put- up with great speed and little skill. “Many unnecessary things will go. Cellars, for instance, are expensive and in many cases you can do without them and use :a heating plant on the first floor. Better planning with less waste will become ‘a necessity. And in many cases houses will be smaller as an economy measure. “Plastics are good buf expensive and raw material for them may become scarce. Wood is probably the coming material, some in its natural state and much of it ply-
