JANE JORDAN

- DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am a girl of 18 and ‘while I was attending college in a small town I met a young man whose father is high in the social and political life of the.natian. I very much wanted this young man to ask me for a date and when he did it

...was to go driving. I told him that I could not go just at the time

he asked me but that I wauld love to drive to church with him on the following Sunday morning. He looked puzzled and queer and did not pursue the matter further. Now I feel that I have muffed

my chance. | MISS MUFFET, 2 ” 2 8 " 8 Answer—In this day and time when a young man asks a young lady for a date I suppose he is amazed to be asked to take her to church. After all, he asked you te drive in arder to chat with a view to getting acquainted and did not want to sit sedately througn a sermon. Perhaps he would have been just as astonished if you had asked him to take you to a lecture instead, or a concert, or any other serious gathering of adults where he could not pursue

his romantic interest in you. Since you could not accept his invita~

tion it would have been better for you simply to ask for a raincheck, or to have shown that you were open to other dates of his choosing. I imagine that you are correct in assuming that you muffed your first chance. You ask me why he’ refused to take you to church. Perhaps he isn’t an enthusiastic ehurch goer, and even if he was, did not regard church as a place to start a romance. His mind was on more frivolous things. All you can do to renew his interest is to be friendly and cordial, your manner perhaps you can convince him that a church-going girl can be just as much fun as a non-conformer. Religion is not If he doesn’t respond to further encouragement on your part, there is nothing you can do but give up and try Somebody else. JANE JORDAN. — :
