icago Daily News, Inc. MOSCOW, Sept. 5—The women of Kiev—capital of the Ukraine—

“|are moving in thousands to lay out,

defenses for a last ditch battle for that historic city. A ' correspondent of the newspaper Pravda, Moscow Communist organ, tells of watching a procession of women and girls armed with picks, plodding toward the front to dig more trenches, earthworks, and tank traps at the approaches to the city. Among them are housewives, ' teachers, - office workers: and servant girls. For more than a month the | plucky defenders of Kiev have fought off German assaults -and they are now in jeopardy. Soviet

dispatches from Kiev—the only in-|-

formation available—have the same ‘casual quality as those: from other menaced centers, Leningrad and Odessa. Contrasting with German claims

of panic and confusion, they stress|:

the absence of any wholesale evacuation of Kiev and the fact that the workers are standing by their machines: to the last. : “Today’s reports from Kiev, for instance, tell of pians for a series of lectures on “The Task of Youth in the War Against German Fascism,” being given in public meeting places and of the program for “Scrap Collecticn Day,” set for Sunday—demonstrating again the phenomenon I have so often witnessed here in Moscow, that despite losses of thousands of square miles of territory; the Russians have not succumbed to defeatism. 2
