| LATEST ALLISON P18 DISPLAYED

‘Glamour Git? Is Is Nazi Dud Bomb Brought From England.

By SAM TYNDALL

National defense, but particularly “things aviation,” are packin’ ‘em in at the State Fair—to the tune of about 16,000 lookers a day. Tucked over in one corner of the

sprawling “ pop-corn strewn Fair

Grounds, the ‘National Defense Show is getting the orice-over from about one out of every three persons who make the annual trek to the Fair. - As far as one can tell, the Defense Show is one of the first five most popular exhibits. For the farmers, it’s the livestock first; for the city dweller, it’s probably the manufacturers’ building. When they are finished with the first “objec-

tive’—it’s on to the Defense Show.|

The Defense Show is mostly an aviation exhibit—miniatyress of the famous Varplanes, but the “real thing” when it comes to the airplane motors.

Display Plane Engines L

; There are four models of the Allison * liquid-cooled engine—including the new F model 12-cylinder engine and the much-talked-of 24cylinder “giant.” Then there are two “cutaway” models of a Wright air-cooled engine, Glamour honors go to the Allison exhibit, where hundreds hang around and look, and then pick up their ears when a bolder spectator asks for details from an engineer assigned to the exhibit. The answers are informative but general, except when someone, exhijbiting a thorough knowledge ‘of aviation engines," asks something too specific. “I'm sorry, but we can’t say,” is the answer.

It's “Very Latest”

In case the Fair goers visiting the aviation exhibits might doubt’ that the Model F the “latest,” the date “Aug. 23, 1941,” when it was accepted, is stamped on its side. ‘The individual “glamour girl” hongrs of the show go to the 2000pound bomb, which Army officers say came from England where the Germans deposited it sometime ago. It was a dud. Two early ‘model Sperry bombsights also are on display in a glass case. Miniatures include the Boeing B-17, famed Flying Fortress, the Al-lison-poweied Bell FM-1, an ex-

| perimental pusher type interceptor.

Other defense items include the 27 mm. aircraft cannon, the armament which gives the Bell Aira-

cobra its name, “the Flying Can-|

non”; and .30-caliber machine guns, aerial cannons, propellers, parachutes and dozens of other pieces of Air Corps “tackle” which is the vogue throughout the land these

days. —aqt DEE’S
