TURKS REFUSE: PILOT FOR ITALIAN TANKER
- ANKARA, Turkey, Sept. 4 (U. P). —Turkey has solved one of its most delicate diplomatic problems of the war by offering to permit an Italian oil tanker to pass through the Dardanelles but without a Turkish pilot to guide it through the thick Turkish mine fields. 5 "As the result the tanker, the 10,915 ton Tarvisio, declined the offer with thanks and started back into the Aegean Sea. fo The Tarvisio is an, Italian navy tanker mounting. four 4.7 inch guns and -two 3-inch anti-aircraft guns. It has special anti-torpedo bulges. July 11 it showed up at Chanak as a “merchantman,” on its way to Constanza, Rumania, for . oil. It asked permission to pass through Turkey’s Dardanelles strait and the British protested angrily. Italy replied that the Tarvisio was now a simple merchantman, having been stricken from the naval list. : The problem was a most important one because it involved a
