‘Spiritual Repairs’ Advocaied By Dr. Fifer,'While You Wait’

“The throngs that pass on the sidewalk are told that shoes will be shined, hats cleaned and suits pressed while the owner waits,” wriles Dr. Orien W. Fifer in the Christian Advocate. In his Advocate column titled “Repairs While You Wait,” Dr. “Even more necessary than the reconditioning of Sothine are the repairs needed in all physical and spiritual life.”

These thoughts of Dr, Fifer's coming, now, on the eve of his 50th anniversary as a Methodist minister, are significant as the result of a half century of service as pastor, editor and district superintendent. He and Mrs. Fifer will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with an open house tomorrow. . Dr. Fifer will be officially retired from the Indiana Conference next week. Yesterday: morning he preached on “Obeying the Heavenly Vision,” at the Central Avenue Methodist Church. The Fifers have served congregations in Nebraska, Iowa and Colorado as well as Indiana. It is proper to say “the Fifers” because Mrs, Fifer has been her husband's complement and helpmate always, taking her part in the activities of the church as she brought up their four children, a daughter, Mrs. Herschel Davis, and their sons, Orien Jr, Warren and Paul. Dr. Fifer was editor of the (Cincinnati) Christian Advocate for nine years prior to its absorption by the (national) Christian Advocate published in Chicago. Last winter, accompanied by Mrs. Fifer, he spent several months in Washington, D. C,, planning a million dollar emergency campaign for the church.

{ | During the National Christian Misi"{sion, here, he headed the Commit- : |tee of 100.

Closing Dr. Fifer’s column on “Repairs While You Wait” is this expression of faith: “Do we not know that ever round our restlessness is our Heavenly Father's. restfulness? That along life’s long, busy, toilsome roads he provides stations

where he ‘restoreth the soul?’”

Moscow Says Germany Has|

Moved Divisions From Western Europe. MOSCOW, Sept. 2 (U. P.) —Ger-

many is transferring entire divi-|

sions of troops from Occupied France, Belgian and Holland to the

Eastern Front fo bolster its lines}

and replace its terrific losses in

Asserting that a regiment of the 161st German Division had been routed, the High Command quoted a German prisoner that the division had only recently arrived from the

{Toulouse area of France.

Black Sea Area Raided

It then added its claim that men were being withdrawn from Holland and Belgium as well as France to fill gaps in the German armies. The communique said Russian planes had been raiding enemy har‘bors in the Black Sea and enemy troops in the Black Sea area and had disabled one enemy ship and destroyed 83 tanks and more than 50 armored cars. Of the general situation, the communique said only that fighting continued throughout last night on the entire front. But there seemed no doubt ‘that the Red Army, which Hitler claimed long ago to have broken, was

counter-attacking all the way from}. the Leningrad area to the lower]

Ukraine. Stopped at Lake Ilmen

Smashing into the German lines in the Lake Ilmen area south of Leningrad, the Russians apparently- have stopped the German offensive in that region. The central army of Marshal Semyon Timoshemko has pushed back the Germans in the Smolensk area. Marshal Semyon Budenny, in the south, is not only holding the Germans on the Dnieper River line but his men are now feeling out the

German strength in attacks on the|

west side of the river.

BYRD LASHES AGAIN AT DEFENSE SETUP

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 (U. P.).— Senator Harry F. Byrd (D. Va.) today renewed his attack on the Administration’s handling: of the rearmament program as the new seven-man Supply Priorities and Allocations Board meets for the first time. The Board, created by President Roosevelt last week, meets late this afternoon to draft plans for greater production of armaments and to outline the policy - enunciated yesterday by the President—that “we must do our full part in eonquering” the Nazi military machine, Mr. Byrd asked in a radio: ad-

dress last night for “fundamental

replanning and basic reorganization” of the defense set-up, includ-

ing prohibition of strikes and the}

appointment of a single procurement director.

He charged that the United |.

States has “failed woefully”. in supplying Great Britain with the fighting equipment she needs. OPM Director William S. Knudsen and Price Administrator Leon Henderson, he said, are “able men,” but he maintained that the new Board and the generally reshuffling of top defense production men was not the answer to production needs.

PICKETS FORM SOLID WALL AT CAR PLANT

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 2 (U. P.) — The Steel Workers Organizing Committee, C. I. O, ringed the struck Pressed ‘Steel Car Co. with a solid mass of pickets today, thwarting plans of the company to resume defense production with independent union forces. : Assembling in groups of six to 10 men each, approximately 1500 members of the S. W. O. C. milled about the plant, turning away employees who sought to enter. There was no violence. Stowe Township’s entire 12-man police force was on duty. : The S. W. O. C. struck the plant last Friday, alleging company discrimination against its members and refusal by the company to agree to a National Labor Relations Board election between the S. W. O. C. and the Independent Car & Foundry Workers’ Union.
