2 4 The Question Box Q—How may bruised spots of furniture be erased? .A—By wetting slightly and covering with a damp blotter or piece of felt. Then place the rounded end of a thimble on the blotter, directly over the dent, and press it into the cavity with a hot flatiron. Hold until the wood is well heated and steam causes the wood cells of the dent to swell to their original positions. Afterwards polish well with powder and oil. Q—What is the strongest opening bid in contract bridge? A—The opening .two-bid in a suit. It is forcing to game and should not be made without five or more honor tricks, except for occasional freak hands containing unusually long suits when 4% honor tricks are sufficient. The trump suit should be very strong and headed by at least A-K, K-Q-J, or better. : Q—Is it advisable to prepare orange juice the night before it is to be used? A—Although orange juice may lose some freshness of flavor, it will not lose appreciable amounts of vitamin C if stored in a refrigerator.
Q—What is the average rate of gain in weight for a new baby?
A—Most babies gain five to eight ounces a week for six months, when the weight is about sixteen pounds. The gain after that is slower, a pound or more a month for the next half year. This is for the average baby and a child may gain more or less: and still be perfectly normal. A baby should be weighed each week at the same time of the day on the same scales at home, in the doctor's office, or at a clinic. By MARGUERITE YOUNG Times Special Writer NEW YORK, Sept. ‘2.—Street shoes are getting closer to earth. Party slippers are gayer, and some are very frivolous, Between these two basic types, manufacturers and
designers are drawing a clearer line. Otherwise, they're emphasizing va-
riety of pattern less,’ style and wear-|
ability more.
That’s news, and there's an
in teresting idea behind it. :
Dan Palter, a carriage-trade de-|}
signer who knows .shoes fr years back,, when he started business as a boy sweeping out the workrooms, explained the matter forthrightly. “Women went brutally chi-chi during the last war,” said Palter. “They competed for the attention of the gentlemen who remained at home, and they were all flash and frou-frou. Do you remember the sequihs and slither of 1917? “This time, women are dressing for work and for themselves. They have a care for details and for com-
fort.” . Original Ornamentation
Which doesn’t mean your shoes won't flatter you this fall. On the contrary, a shoe that’s correctly designed and looks easy, too, can make your foot seem smaller and more graceful than one which is all stiff stilt. And this year’s shoes display at times the most individual feminine ornaments that ever took a woman's fancy. oh “Gayety, - by all means!” exclaimed Palter. He leaned against a rack holding : several tailored shoes with broad, round toes and soles, and with tops as soft as kitten’s fur,’ Those shoes were simple but not severe—they were winecolored, smooth. “Nowadays smart women want to look gay at certain hours, especially after dark. We figure this way: more women are working full time.. Madam, also, is busy enough to own a pair of shoes to live in all day long. : “She’ll go home to relax a little before dinner, then she’ll step into something: utterly different and dashing. Similarly, business and professional women can lise a pick-me-up. Hence were making a whole cocktail of colored shoes.” Palter got some guidance in all this from his own wife. : “She’s spending the days, now, learning to take apart motor valves and pistons,” he remarked. “Does she want a flat heel—or does she?” Another thing—this designer is making far fewer open-toes this fall, and he’s not the only one. At this time in the last few years, Palter was designing shoes 50-50, or half of them, with open toes. Now, 75 per cent of both his daytime and his evening models are closed. The question is: Who wants a toeless shoe in winter and maybe no stocking, either? It is true that youll see new open-toed shoes on the foot and in the shops: one of the swankiest and finest is a sculptured step-in with a lovely scroll at

Instead of the famous bootmaker’s tan, which came from England, the carriage trade will wear an American leather called antique. . It is calf, finished with black polish and shined to a subtle sheen. This is shown in moderate-priced shoes also, and it is worn with green and rust costumes. For that matter, a good number of green and wine shoes are being made. It looks as if the genuinely elegant, airy foot is coming into its own. And, you know, a foot can be graceful regardless of its measurements. In fact, any foot looks smarter when it’s comfortably shod.
