Spokesman for County Road Workers Reasserts Contract Demand.

Teamsters and Chauffers Union officials today denied that the strike of County Highway Department employees is interfering with national defense in any way. Between 75 and 80 employees of the Highway Department have been on strike since Wednesday morning in protest of County Commisisoners’ refusal to sign an agreement with the union. County officials had charged that the strike prevented the unloading of several freight cars, thus preventing them from being used in defense hauling. “We are perfectly willing to have

Williams, union sec= retary-treasurer. “However, we will not distribute this material so that it can be used on county highways. We have tried to be fair in our negotiations and for this we are attacked in the false guise of ‘national defense’ to confuse the public.” Mr. Williams said his union realizes that it cannot get a closed shop but said “there is no reason for failure to recognize the union.” County Commisisoners have said that it is legally impossible for a public board to sign a labor cone

SET MINIMUM PAY IN APPAREL INDUSTRY

WASHINGTON, Aug. 29 (U. P.) — Wage Hour Administrator Philip B. Fleming announced today that the 40-cent-an-hour minimum wage for the women’s and children’s apparel industry will become effective Sept. 29. A formal wage order putting the recommended wage into effect will be issued early in September. The division estimated that about 60,000 of the 240,000 persons employed in the industry will receive salary increases. The new regulation allows the employment of learners at 25 cents

an hour for eight weeks and at 32%: cents an hour for an additional four weeks.
