Center Township Relief Rolls Dwindle as Employment Pickup Here Absorbs Hundreds of Idle Workmen
By ROGER BUDROW It is a sign that business is good when some things in a business index go downward. Center Township relief is one of these. As WPA has reduced its rolls, a number of WPA workers have gone on Center Township relief rolls. But despite this, the rise in employment in Indianapolis has brought the number of relief cases to less than half the number at this time last year. At the end of last week there were 1641 active cases of relief and 399 inactive ones, a total of 2040. This compares with 4243 inactive cases and 865 inactive ones for a total of 5108 at this time last year, acccrding to Trustee Henry Mueller. Costs. at the end of last week, were $14,035 compared with $55,384 at the same time last year. Another index decline which is in reality a sign of good business is the number of persons claiming unemployment benefits. Seasonal declines in industry invariably throw some workers out of their jobs at this time of year. But the number is far less than it was last year. The number claiming unemployment benefits here last week was 1732 as compared with 3026 last year at this time. Unemployment benefit claims in the Indianapolis area are nearly 48 per cent below last vear. Most of the other “minuses” in the index are in livestock receipts at the Indianapolis stockyards. But this is a situation that can’t be changed too quickly. Farmers, discouraged by low livestock prices in recent years, cut down on their livestock production. However, with prices at the high

STEEL CORPORATION APPEALS FOR SCRAP
BUTLER, Pa. Aug. 26 (U. P.).— Faced with a “large scale” defense production curtailment by Oct. 1 because of an iron and steel scrap shortage, the American Rolling Mill Co. here today appealed to the public for aid in maintaining the present level of operations. The company offered to pay prevailing prices for scrap collected in its behalf, emphasizing that it would accept no donations. Tt urged the public to sell its scrap, “whether it be locomotive or lawnmower” to authorized scrap dealers who, in turn, will sell to the company Harry Holiday, Armco Butler division manager, pointing out that the plant's 1000-ton daily needs is forcing the company to dig into its reserve supplies, said curtailment of defense production is threatened within six weeks unless more scrap is made available. Similar appeals to citizens living| in the vicinity of the company’s plants at Ashland. Ky. and Middletown, O., have proved successful.

PROFITS FOR TAXES
NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (U.P.).—A study of the financial statement of 257 leading industrial companies for the first half of 1941 discloses that they set aside 51.6 per cent of their aggregate earnings for Federal taxes, compared with 26.7 per cent last year, the Conference Board reported today. As a result of sharply increased provisions for taxes, the measured companies in the aggregate showed an increase of only 20 per cent in combined net income, despite the fact that before Federal tax reductions the increase in earnings amounted to 82 per cent, the independent fact-finding agency said. Hardest hit by the increased tax requirements were aircraft and parts companies. For six such concerns, the analysis disclosed that earnings before taxes showed an increase of 127 per cent over a year ago, but after taxes were 6 per cent below last year.
