Didn't Know,” isn't rhythmic. The nicest bit of musical sentiment out recently is Gene Krupa's recording of “Got a Letter from My Kid Today.” Les Brown's second “I Guess I'll Have to Rest” and “Be Fair” an® Count Basie fails below par, for him at least, in “Fancy Meetin’ You” and “One Two Three O'Lairy.” n o 2 IF YOU'VE got that Latin feel= Ing, you might try the “Congas=Rumbas” album by the Lecuona Cuban Boys and Antobal and his Orchestra (Columbia) or the “One, Two, Three, Kick” packet by Xavier Cugat's orchestra (Victor). Both are four-record pack= ets, and it's a tossup between them. Al Goodman and his orchestra (Columbia) record a flock of “Memories.” The arrangements are of the light symphonic nature and not bad. Fats Waller, in a group of spiritual favorjtes played on the organ for Victor, gives evidence that he'd best stay in the jazz field and if one doesn’t mind monotgny, there's a four-record col- | lection of two -piano boogie~ | woogie by those peers, Pete John son and Albert Ammons (Victor), “Foot Pedal Boogie,” “Walkin’ the Boogie,” “Barrel House Boogie,” ete. FEARFUL LEST THE WOMANHOOD OF our great land be going around looking like escaped members of the Alcatraz Auxiliary, the Hollywood Hair Stylists Guild has gone before the executives of Paramount on bended knee. The fear which these noble gentlemen hold in their heaving chests concerns the role of Maria in the picturization of Ernest Hemingway's “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Maria, you know, fell into some rather bad hands and they cropped her hair off right up to the nubbin, According to Mr, Hemingway's description, she really looks a sight. And it was concerning this tha nair-doers, wrote to Producer Buddy “The members of the Hollywood Hair Stylists Guild have discussed this matter at length and we do attach great importance to it,” Mr. Aerts wrote, apparently with a heavy heart. “We are acutely aware of the enormous influence Hollywood's films exert on the women of the world. We are convinced that if a beautiful actress does crop her hair within an inch of her scalp, millions of, women will {follow suit.” Barber Aerts continued. “Perhaps you do not. realize that this single act mignt result in millions of women shearing their hair off and then looking like something out of a nightmare, “We think it only fair to the women of the world, and especially American women who are the most chic in the world, for us to be in a position to tell them of the results to be expected before they practically denude themselves.”
A “revival series” of six plays, some or all of which will be presented in addition to the regular subscription season at English's. was announced today in New York by the Theater Guild. RECORDING
Fats Waller 1s up to his usual humorous pianistic tricks in “Twenty-Four Robbers” and “Do You Have to Go?’ The former has a set of lyrics which, after considerable deliberation, I have decided make no sense. At least they don't to me. But theyre funny. And Fats makes the other piece the same way. Dinah . Shore, one of the best articles on records today, 1s excellent, as usual, in “You and I” and “On a Bicycle Built for Two.” On the male side, we have Dick Todd singing “Say It Isn't So” and “Sally.” Best of the rhythm pieces recorded lately are Earl Hines’ “Up Jumped the Devil” and “South Side”—both will make you bounce, if you know what I mean. Glenn Miller has two new Bluebirds out, neither of which are particularly startling: “Under Blue Canadian Skies” and “Adios” and “The Cowboy Serenade” and “Below the Equator.’ You might or might not like Benny Goodman's “Changes” and “Russian Lullaby.” But Sonny Dunham's “Lament to Love” and “Down, Down, Down” seem likely to catch your ear. = 2 4 CAB CALLOWAY. whose band sounds less like Cab Calloway every day, delves lightly into the railroad situation in “Take the ‘A’ Train” and ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo.” The Cab takes the vocal in the latter and the lyrics are clever. Also in the rhythm class is Les Brown's “All That Meat and No Potatoes,” the Fats Wailer picce, and “As If You

Lewis Stone, who hasn't been cut of a Hardy film since “Yellow Jacket,” will slip away to appear as an Army officer in “Steel Cavalry,” a story of the Army's mechanized forces. . . . Richard Nichols, the lad who probably won many hearts in “Blossoms in the Dust,” is working with Walter Pidgeon and Rosalind Russell in “Her Honor.” Another youngster to be seen for the first time in “The Shadow of the Thin Man” is 5-vear-old Richard Hall.
