The Cost

Parks Johnson and Wally Butterworth, conductors of Vox Pop, one of the most popular quiz programs on the air, will be in Indianapolis Sept. 1 for a broadcast from the Indiana State Fair at 7 p. m. The broadcast will be fed to the Columbia network by its local affiliate, WFBM. The broadcast will be from the Youth Activities Building and tick= ets may be obtained by applying to WFBM by mail. One thousand tickets are available. Only requests coming through the mail will be accepted. The State Fair broadcasts will be one of the first in the Vox Poppers [new series and Wally and Parks, who will arrive here Aug. 31 to prepare for the broadcast, promise the usual assortment of varied and valuable awards for the contestants,

Prime Minister Churchill's broadcast tomorrow will be carried locally over stations WFBM., WIRE and WISH from 3 p. m. to 3:30. Mr. Churchill is scheduled to give an explanation to the people of the British Empire concerning his recent meeting at sea with President Roosevelt,

Apparently the threatened mates rial shortage is not going to intere fere with the ability of radio lise teners to obtain needed parts and accessories for their radio sets. Ruling that maintenance of existe ing communications is essential to civilian morale, Director Leon Hen= derson of the Office of Price Admin istration has allocated enough metals to radio equipment manufacturers to assure production of tubes and. condensers needed in the repair of the nation’s 50,000,000 sets, Mr. Henderson acted when he learned manufacturers were finding it difficult to maintain adequate production.

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (U, P).~ The New York Curb Exchange ane nounced today that it will retire three outstanding memberships under its recently adopted plan to reduce the number of curb “Seats” from 550 to 500. Governors of the exchange, the announcement said, have author= ized the purchase for retirement of the seats of David Maltman, William L. Platte and the estate of Max Birke.

Although on vacation in Mexico City, conductor Andre Kostelanetz will have a part on his Music That Refreshes program tomorrow, WFBM at 7 o'clock. By means of a two-way hookup between WABC in New York and XEQ {in Mexico City, the maestro will produce a 2000mile downbeat { which ought to be just about the longest on record. Mr. Kostelanetz will start the program with a piano performance of ‘La. Golodrina,” one of Mexico's favorite tunes. law, but actually working only 48 hours. In July workers in durable goods factories here worked an average of 43.1 hours a week, received an average 3727 pay check. Non-durable goods workers had a 38.7-hour week and received S26.77 on an average. Retail trade employees worked 41.9 hours for 820.21 a week, while wholesale trade employees worked 43 hours for $29.26.
