Most plants in the home garden are overprivileged and undernourished. This brings us against one of the most difficult problems of the modern garden—how and what to feed it. Problems are many and varied. Older gardens may, through many years of overplanting, have run

lies in the organic material they add to the soil. Many concentrated fertilizers have been introduced to the market in recent years. These contain no inert fillers at all and are entirely soluble in water. It is the opinion of many experts that, if the gardener will take the trouble to use them intelligently, they are the cheapest of all plant foods. Some come in tablet form and others as a quid. ||

dry of plant food. New gardens, especially those planted about new houses, may have bad growth soil to begin with. We all want better and greener growth on our evergreens and deciduous trees and shrubs, and bigger and brighter perennials and flower beds. To achieve these results we must realize that along with other garden chores, it is well worth while to fertilize heavily those plants which we do not ordinarily give any special feeding. Well-fed plants are less susceptible to disease and better able to withstand insect ravages.
Commercial Food Superior
Many old-timers do not realize that commercial fertilizer is superior to manure in several ways. Commercial fertilizers are often called stimulants. They are not. They are carriers of plant food.
