and foremost to convince the Russians that they can count on the democracies to do syeryiiing possible to assist them. Despite grumblings on Capitol Hill in Washington, the American Administration sincerely hopes that Russia will defeat Hitler and intends to let Stalin know that America wants to contribute by all available material to this end. Americans and British alike are anxious to gain the confidence of

In Washington, while Soviet representatives feel that supplies are not moving smartly enough toward Russia, Americans insist that they are moving heaven and earth, and incidentally stinting China, to get things for the Soviets in the quickest possible time. Undersecretary Welles is believed unofficially to have blessed the efforts of a newly formed American Committee for Medical Aid to Russia, to collect funds and provide the Russian Red Cross and Red Crescent societies with what they most need in the way of medical supplies. Soviet Ambassador Constantin Oumansky has supplied a list of the 77 things most needed immediately and the committee is opening its doors at 56 W. 45th St., New York City, to contributors and
