U.S. Defense May Turn Blonds
Into Boilermakers’ Helpers
By EDWIN A. LAHEY i Indi li Coe he Shien Dally News. In WASHINGTON, Aug. 21.—The boilermaker might have some difficulty keeping his mind on the boiler ere the defense period is over. The boilermaker’s helper is likely to turn out to be a blond.
Paul V. McNutt, Federal Security Administrator, has been looking around for things that women might do, besides knit, and finds in a study of 1894 occupations in 21 key defense industries that only 331 of these occupations are definitely unsuitable for women. Of the occupations studied, according to McNutt, 654 were such
that women could be placed in them immediately.
“A numerous list of occupations in the manufacture of parts for electrical equipment and in the operation of boring, shelving, welding, cutting, drawing, and other types of automatic machinery used in the manufacture of machines and machine tools were included in the list of acceptable jobs for women,” a bulletin from McNutt's office says.
“In the ship and boat-building industry, women were listed as acceptable for employment as boilermakers’ helpers, draftsmen, machinists’ helpers, blueprint machine operators, flash welders, and a large list of other occupations.”
