DEFENSE RATE AINS IN FAVOR

But Survey Shows Public Is Still Not Satisfied With Production.

By GEORGE GALLUP

Director. American Institute of Public Opinion

PRINCETON, N. J.. Aug. 20—The American public iz with the progress of defense production now that it was six months ago, but a substantial number of voters are still far from satisfied. The proportion of people who think America’s production is not going ahead fast enough is larger than the proportion Who think it is, Strikes and la bor disputes, and lack of coordination among defense officials in Washington, are Dr. Gallup chiefly to blame for defense lags, fn the opinion of those who are not satisfied. Todav’s survey is the second coni in recent months on the del cticn issue. Each survey asked the same question “Do vou think America’s production of arms. airplanes and other war materials is going ahead fast enough?” The trend of sentiment follows: TODAY

Several things are of interest in this list Whereas lack of organization in the defense set-up was ranked only fourth in importance six months ago, it is todav considered the second most important factor Another noteworthy fact about the above list is the virtual absence of any criticism of manufacturers and big business leaders. It is the Government and labor, rather than businessmen, who are being eriticized chiefly by the public.

AIRPLANE MECHANIC SHORTAGE 1S FACED

wv Srienece Servt WASHINGTON, Aug. 20-—With $4000 military airplanes on order todav. and eight to 10 mechanics feeded per airplane, the shortage mechanics will run into the indreds of thousands within two ears unless something is done sbout it. This is the verdict of two surveys, one conducted by a Government agency, the other by a committee of the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce. The survevs reveal that the private mecharics schools are operating at 30 per cent capacity, and many are facing bankruptcy and their facilities are idle for lack of business. Three reasons are cited by the gchool men for the low level of their business Young men who would have gone to a mechanics school, find that ther can now get jobs without training because of the defense program 2. Selective Service has taken many young men who either were in school or would have gone to school. 3. The Government is offering free vocational training which does not equip men to service airplanes, and this lures many men away from more expensive training.
