Bank of France Statement Indicates Drop in Occupation Bill.

By PAUL GHALI

Copyligh, 1841, by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News, Inc. VICHY, Aug. 19—In 13 months the German army of occupation cost | France a total of 117,000,000,000 francs ($2,340.000,000 at the franc’s ‘nominal value, 2 ramos cents), the Bank a i SUE of France dis- ; closed today in the first weekly § balance sheet issued since June, 1940. Its statement, which covered the week of July 1824 disclosed the amount held for pr German credits “8 for the first time Mr. Ghali | and fixed this amount at 68,332,000,000 ($1,366,640,-| 000). Vice Premier Jean Darlan announced on May 7, that the 400,- | 000.000 francs ($8,000,000) paid to Germany daily was to be reduced to 300,000.000 ($6,000,000) but this decrease seems never to have materialized. Negotiations are reported to be continuing butethey are kept secret. Bank advances to the Government, as of July 24, said the statement, had totaled 234,163,000,000 francs. According to a financial] dispatch from Paris, on Dec. 31.] 1940, banks had lent the Government a total of 229,000,000,000 francs. If the latter figure is correct, it! means that between December, 1940, | and July, 1941, advances to the! Vichy Government amounted tol only 5,000,000,000 francs. This would seem to prove that most of France’s | financial effort for reconstruction | was made between June and De-| cember of last year.
