Tribe Looked Fine Until 9th— Then the Millers Came to Bat

Times Special MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 19—For eight innings last night the Indianapolis Indians looked the part of a well-oiled machine and apparently were headed to achieve a startling upset. But that was before the Minneapolis Millers came to bat for the last time in the ninth. Until then, the Hoosiers were out in front,

CHICAGO, Aug. 19 (U. P)— Eleanor Dudley of Chicago and Mrs. Russell Mann of Omaha, Neb, who carded par 76s to pace 32 qualifiers, were rated the players to beat today as match play began in the Women’s Western Amateur Golf Championship. Miss Dudley, national women’s intercollegiate titleholder from the University of Alabama and former Illinois State Champion, faces Barbara Wilder, Chicagy. Mrs. Mann, current trans-Mississippi titlist, is paired with Mrs. O. H. Romadka, Rochester, Minn. Marion Miley, Lexington, Ky, runnerup last year to national champion Betty Jameson, plays Dorothy Foster, Springfield, Ill. Miss Miley shot a 79 to finish three strokes behind the leaders and one behind third-place Georgia Tainter, Fargo, N. D. Miss Tainter meets Virginia Nilles, Chicago. Other strong contenders were Virginia Ingram, Chicago, and Mrs. Frank Newell, Long Beach, Cal, the former Elizabeth Hicks, who both scored 80s. M®&s Ingram meets with Rena Nelson, Chicago, while Mrs. Newell faces Mrs. O. C. Bell, Chicago. The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday with the 36-hole final set for Saturday.

NAVY IS IMPROVING ITS HARBOR NETS

SAN FRANCISCO, July 25 (U. P)). —Working almost unnoticed, 250 officers and men from the 12th U. S. Naval District are solving problems of great importance to national defense. Working with a crane, a few buildings on a hillside overlooking San Francisco Bay, three boats, a field for weaving nets, several thousand anchors and 100 miles of heavy | steel wire, these men are fashioning defenses which ultimately will be used in every major United States harbor as protection against submarine and mosquito boat attack. Called the California City Naval Nef Depot and Training Station— a school specializing in the science of trapping submarines in steel nets —the situation started from scratch, inasmuch as the science of submarine defense was found to be greatly lacking when a U-boat pierced the “wonderful” Scapa Flow defenses to sink the British battleship Royal Oak. New type nets are being developed, as are new systems of laying them and keeping them in position. |,

Another five-round middleweight scrap has been added to the fight card scheduled for Sports Arena Thursday night, and will pair Al Sheridan and Norman Tierre, local sluggers, completing the five-event mitt bill. Johnny Denson of Indianapolis and Tiger Neville Beech of Birmingham, Ala, heavyweights, who are slated to clash in the ten-round main event attraction, both plan light workouts tomorrow to wind up their training chores. Beech will go through his routine at the West Side A. C., while Denson will taper off at his training site near Nobles-

Other scraps on the card will offer a six-round heavyweight battle between Red Bruce of Pittsburgh and Jethro Jeffers, local 184-pound-er; Jue Yee Kong of this city and Cleveland Brown of Cincinnati, in a six-round featherweight fracas, and Jim Tudor and Bob Blue, bcth of Indianapois, in a five-round miaJdleweight bout.
