BOMBER FERRY IS DISASTROUS

Is There to Be Another Airmail Episode? Williams Asks.

By MAJOR AL WILLIAMS

Recently the U. S. Air Corps took over (from civilian pilots hired for the job by the British) the ferrying of British warplanes from the factories of origin on the West Coast to delivery points on the East

Coast. Right off, several twin-en-gined bombers were cracked up. The civilian pilots who had been {lying these ships for a year or more lost only two through crack-

ups. . Most of the ferry pilots are a, youngsters, with Maj. Williams a modicum of flying time and of experience with craft of this advanced type. Is this to be another airmail episode? x

= #

Mr. Knox insists that the Navy is interested in gliders for carrying troops and invasion personnel, but not for training of pilots. We wonder who told him that answer, which ignores the huge pool of German airmen created by intensive glider and soaring-plane programs carried on during the 20-odd years, and being carried on, for the same; purpose, right now. Sweden recently went in for mass training of | glider pilots. Is the atmosphere really different over Europe?

- 5

An unbelievable but true instance of the extent to which service bigotry will run is found in the fact that up to a few years ago the Navy refused to permit a Marine Corps squadron to operate from our carriers. And then when permission was granted, the squadron was one of enlisted pilots. The Army has been: begging a chance to be acquainted with the technique of operating from and to the decks of carriers—futilely. Still, the Army, on a moment's notice, ‘may have to fly its single-seaters from carrier decks when and if a great number of this type of fighting plane must be landed on some foreign shore.

SWEDES PREDICTING N. EUROPEAN BLOW

BERN, Aug. 18.—The Swedish people reckon openly with the possibility that the Battle of the At-|: lantic may resolve itself, in 1942 into the battle for the northern part of the European continent through an attempted British inva-

More Babies for Defense Urged

BOSTON, Aug. 18 (U, P).— Obstetricians were urged by a Boston physician today to help couples produce more babies to man future ships, tanks, and planes, by reducing their fees with each family addition. In a letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine, . Francis H. Higgins said the financial aspects of having babies needed adjustment to encourage larger families. If Germany wins the war and proceeds to utilize the shipyards. and other resources of Europe— perhaps for an attack on this country—“It may mean that 1960 will be the year when our country’s fate is at stake,” wrote Dr. Higgins. “In my opinion, we should do long-range thinking, and attempt to increase our potential army of that time right now. “In other words America needs more babies.”

sion, says a Stockholm dispatch to the newspaper Basler Nachrichten (of Basel). Their concern, the account goes on, is prompted by the reports reaching Stockholm of hurried and widespread efforts to strengthen the coastal defenses of Norway and of the taking over of administrative duties in these areas by officials of the German occupying forces. Norwegian, German and “thousands” of Danish laborers are being used for this work, it adds. Maj. Vikdun Quisling’s party, the account says, is weaker in the Norweégian west coast area than in other parts of the country.

Ratoff to Make 3 Films in East

NEW YORK, Aug. 18 (U. P.) —A program for producing major films in the East—apparently the first tangible result of Mayor F. H. LaGuardia’s campaign to bring some of the movie makers here—has been announced by Gregory M. Rafoff, director-producer-actor. Ratoff said three big budget films will go into production in the Eastern service studios at Astoria. Long Island, as soon as ke finishes a picture he now is working on in Hollywood. “New York is the country’s biggest talent pool and has as good technical background material as Hollywood,” he declared. “If fogbound, blitz-bound London can turn out a first-class film like ‘Major Barbara” New York is good enough for me.” One cf the pictures will be “The American Way,” starring Frederic March. The others will be “Pal Joey,” from the current stage musical of the same name, and “No Money in Her Purse,” for which Jean Fontaine will be borrowed from David O. Selznick.

SPANISH VETERANS TO BACK ROOSEVELT

OMAHA, Neh. Aug. 18 (U. P.).— United Spanish War veterans open théir 43d annual encampment today, pledged to support President Roosevelt's foreign policy “even to another war.” Joseph R. Hanley, State Senator from New York City and senior

vice commandér of the USVW, ap- | CREIG

peared the strongest candidate to succeed National Commander Rufus E. Foster of New Orleans. In a pre-convention statement, Mr. Foster said the organization would support administration foreign policy “even to another war.” He said, however, that the veterans hoped for continued peace.

BERLIN SCOFFS AT ‘CHICAGO METHODS’

BERLIN, Aug. 18 (U. P.)—An authorized spokesman said today it “obvious” that President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill are planning to repla the League of Nations with an Anglo-Saxon police force and deal with Europe “according to Chicago m ods. ” “The United States people may have considerable police experience in dealing with gangsters, but they prove daily that they have no exin dealing With Europe,”

NEW HAVEN, Conn. Aug. 18— | Large quantities of Vitamin Bl, the “morale vitamin” which exercises a beneficial effect on the human nerv-

{ous system, have been found in the buds and leaves of many common American trees, by Yale University botanists. Using a constant temperature tissue culture laboratory for experiments, the scientists found heavy concentrations of the substance in the buds of oak, red mapie, horse chestnut, elm, sycamore and white pine trees. - “Although Vitamin B1 is now produced by synthetic chemical processes, this discovery points to a large natural source,” said Prof. Paul R. Buritholder. “This finding may offer a clue to the source of essential vitamins for many forest animals.” Experiments in which basswood and maple trees were girdled, by removing a ring of bark from the trunk early in the spring, show that almost no Vitamin B1 has appeared below the ring in mid-summer. Yet huge quantities of the vitamin have been found above the ring. This seems to indicate that ultimately a girdled tree may die not onlv from lack of food but from vitamin starvation as well.
