Defense Rationing Brings Home Economy Need to U. S. Motorists
GAIN OF MILLION INREALTY SALES
North Side Group Reports
Accent on economy is a slogan of the automotive industry today.
With the Eastern States already getting their first taste of partial rationing and the threat of ever-increasing travel costs, the American motorist is becoming increasingly aware of how many miles his car
operates on a gallon of gas and what can be done to save tires.
Here is a chart for a 1000-mile trip which illustrates the price a
ration-faced public must meet if it insists on speed:

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in line with the economy drive, has issued these steps in saving your tires: Don’t drive in excess of 50 miles per hour because tires wear out 62 per cent faster at 70 miles an hour than at 50. Check each week on air pressure because pressure which is too low breaks down sidewalls and high pressure wears out the center of the tread. Inspect brakes frequently and also wheel alignment. Rotate tires every 2000 or 3000 miles.

Pamphlets Give
Homes Advice
Three important pamphlets, available now at the Central Library, will give the home owner and the prospective home owner some sound advice on planning. Here they are:
FIRST PRINCIPLES of kitchen planning, by Grace L. Pennock (Ladies Home Journal, Philadelphia,- Pa.). Many suggestions are given here to help you plan a comfortable and efficient kitchen. There are charts for cabinet and counter space and for arranging and placing your kitchen utensils so that there is a place for everything. HOW TO HAVE THE HOME YOU WANT (United States Gypsum Co., Chicago, Ill). A comprehensive answer to your questions, whether to build or buy, how to select. an architect and builder, and how to finance it. A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING, (Ladies Home Journal, Philadelphia, Pa.). Closet space seems always to be at a premium. This has plans that are compact yet afford the most room in closet space. The pamphlet includes closets for men, women and children, linen closets, shoe cabinets and wardrobe cabinets.
WEIGHTS ELIMINATED IN NEWER WINDOWS
A large number of houses now under construction in Indianapolis are using the “up-and-down-opez-ing” steel windows which retains all the convenience of the doublehung wooden window and frame. One of the features of the new window is the elimination of the usual sash weights and cords. In their place, completely enclosed spring balances are used, attached
FARM MORTGAGE INSURANGE URGED
The Mortgage Bankers Association of America, in a special report, has urged that the National Housing Act be amended to extend to farm mortgages a similar type of mutual insurance now embodied In FHA home loans. The association believes that by creating an insured farm mortgage system, possibly within the present FHA system, the Government would be relieved of well over a billion dollars of credit burden it is now carrying because at least that amount of farm mortgages could be transferred from Government agencies to private interests with the insurance guarantee. The report states that “What the FHA has done for the urban home loan as an investment needs to be done for the farm loan. It can be done under an insured program if the insurance fund is adequate and properly administered as the FHA fund has been. An FHA farm mortgage insurance fund can be expected to give as gcod an account of itself as any other type of insurance.”
HINT VARYING TOPS FOR DEFENSE HOMES
According to an article in the Indiana Real Estate Journal, Defense Housing Co-ordinator Charles F. Palmer has indicated that differences in cost of construction in various communities will be recognized in setting defense house cost limits. It is well known, the article continues, that construction costs are higher in larger communities than in the smaller towns. It has been suggested that the top cost limit be set at $7500 in larger cities and that a figure around $5000 might be taken as the standard in the smaller communities. The primary purpose, according to the article, is to provide housing for defense workers and it would defeat the purpose of the measure in many communities to establish a maximum level too low for practical operations.
FHA DOES NOT LEND
Federal Housing Administration insured loans are not Government loans. These loans are made by private lending institutions such as banks, savings and loan associations,

Two More North Side Homes Ready for Owners

Large Rooms a
o #
Two more three-bedroom homes were completed and ready for oc-. cupancy this week, both with the emphasis on comfortable living in the shady quiet of the North Side. Built by the American Estates Co., the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Teeter, 25 W. 59th St., in the Meridian-Kessler Terrace, is the answer to the four-member family. The living room is decorated in white and peach with a fireplace of white wood trim and marble. The kitchen is spacious and features two walls of built-in cabinets. The dining room, done in blue figured wall paper, leads to the screened-in porch which faces on the white gravel side drive. The garage is separate from the house and has room for two cars. The upstairs bedrooms are done in pink for the children and blue for the master bedroom. The bathroom is exceptionally large with a built-in vanity table and sufficient drawer space to accommodate towels and linens. Huge closets are a feature of the three bedrooms. The basement is cut in half by a partition separating the laundry room and oil furnace from the recreation unit. The recreation room has a fireplace and is quite large enough for ping pong or billiards. The three-bedroom home facing the canal at 49 E. Westfield Blvd. is offered for sale by R. E. Willey. Outstanding in the home is the softness of the decorating and the unstained wood cabinets in the kitchen which add a touch of oldtime hominess in this modern house. The connecting double garage faces the back of the lot and a driveway from the boulevard coils around to the garage entrance. The screened-porch in the rear leads from the dining room which is papered in forma] blue design

The upstairs bathroom, the center point from which the three bedrooms stem, is done in green glass and tile. The master bedroom is large with a flowered paper and the other two are studies in green and blue. The second floor windows are low and wide. The basement contains a recreation room, oil heating unit and laundry section. The recreation room, which is long and roomy, also boasts a fireplace.
FUEL BILLS REDUCED BY DOUBLE SHADES
Managers of hotels, clubs, apartment houses, hospitals and other similar buildings are becoming aware of the money saving possibilities of double window shades. Scientists of Armour Research Foundation have found that two cloth shades will prevent about 54 per cent of the heat loss that goes out the window,

ADJUSTABLE SHELVES ADD TO STORAGE AREA
Food closets in kitchens can be frequently increased in capacity by substituting adjustable shelves for usual fixed ones. These will permit storing glass bottles and jars, many of which are now made shorter and lighter to fit modern refrigerators, so that they occupy less space.

They estimate, therefore, that by keeping two shades half drawn! over each window during daylight hours and fully drawn during the! hours of darkness, about 10 per cent of the winter fuel bill can be saved. This discovery is helpful to managements wishing to get away from the standard color scheme for all the interiors, without destroying the uniformity desired for the exterior of the building. Shade cloth of one color may be used for all window shades facing outside, while the shades facing in+ side may be of different colors.
