Electric Eye Brings Back Bessemer Steel Process

By DALE McFEATTERS Times Special Writer PITTSBURGH, Aug. 13.—The “electric eye”—which never suffers from squint, strain or hangover— is bringing back to the hard-pressed steel industry the famous Bessemer process, which was dropped at the

turn of the century in favor of the slower but more accurate openhearth furnace. The Government recently asked steel companies to consider construction of Bessemer converters as a means of speeding up the manufacture of steel, and the CarnegieIllinois Steel Co. quickly announced that two would be built here—the first new Bessemer furnaces constructed for many years. Pittsburgh's position as a steel center was built on the Bessemer process—which is the fastest way to make steel. Also, it is the most spectacular, for roaring flames rise 30 feet in the air as it turns a melt of iron into steel. The Bessemer's flaw—until recently—was that its successful op-
