leaders apparently are quick and far-sighted men, ever on the lookut for a means to promote their cause. Their latest maneuver has been to take the V campaign into their bosom with the publishing of a tune called “The ‘V’ Song.” Its to be Bundles for Britains official song. Its rather a simpie tune, in 4-4 time in the key of C and one

that the piece was written by Saxie Dowell and Bill Ligingston, adding then a few facts which seem to me altogether inappropriate to the spirit of the composition. The organization wants it ! known that Mr. Dowell is the man who wrote “The Three Little Fishes” and “Playmates” and that Mr. Livingston composed “The Popcorn Man” and “Having Wonderful Time.” You may rest assured, however, that “The ‘V’ Song” is quite unlike any of those tunes. In fact, Bundles for Britain would have done just as well not to have mentioned it.

HOLLYWOOD. Aug. 13 (U. P.).— Fritz Leiber, veteran Shakespeardiscovered unexpected professional company when he reported for work at Paramount. : Bing Crosby and Robert Preston announced that they, too, were Shakespearean actors, both having played in “Julius Caesar” at the age of 15. “Ah,” said Crosby when this astounding coincidence was revealed, “the Bard of Avon. 'V'Race IsOn
In Hollywood
Selznick Gets in First With Best Titles
By PAUL HARRISON Times Special Writer
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 13.—Behind the screen: A free-for-all race among movie makers began with the first news of the undercover “V for Victory” campaign in Europe. Rival producers who wanted to file claims for the title found David Selznick already at the Producers Association registering “V for Victory” just plain *V,” and even “* . . , —," code symbol of the movement to encourage and unite Germany's enemies. So Selznick has the best title, but he can't monopolice the story. Other studios are planning to insert “V” sequences into pictures already in preparation, and 20th-Fox probably will be first on the screen with a complete feature about the drive against German morale.
Fields Plays Himself
W. C. Fields is playing himself and using his own name in “The Great Man” at Universal. Studios always are very cautious about screen representations of real people, for fear of libel suits, so attorneys insisted that he give signed permission for the use of his name. “Hollywood,” observed the comedian, “is a strange and wonderful place. Apparently these lawyers were afraid that W. C. Fields might sue the studio over the way W. C. Fields portrays W. C. Fields.” Newest dance team, to be seen doing a conga in “Playmates,” is John Barrymore and May Robsonfl Sir Cedric Hardwicke will have a song-and-dance number in “Valley of the Sun.” Sir Cedric has been a heavy so long that Hollywood has forgotten (if it ever knew) that he was knighted for his comedy work on the English stage. Other players are changing types: Suave Charley Boyer, in a ridiculous outfit, chases fires in “Appointment for Love” and winds up one |sequence with a magnificent black eye. Marlene Dietrich has accepted a mother role for her next pictume at Columbia.

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 13 (U.
