Junior Order of American Mechanics, Auxiliary Meet Next Week.
The joint state convention of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics and the Daughters of] America will open at the Lincoln Hotel Aug. 20 for three days. It will be the 50th annual session of the Junior Order of Mechanics and the 46th annual convention of the Daughters of America, the aux-
iliary group. Mrs. Pearl Benham, 3505 N. Illinois, general chairman of the aux-
iliary program, will be assisted by Mrs. Georgia Petty and Mrs. Ada Spicklemire, both of Indianapolis. Mrs. Benham will have charge of the joint banquet of the two organizations in the Lincoln Hotel | Thursday evening, Aug. 21. CCC ENROLLEES GET HARVEST FURLOUGH
WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (U. P). —Civilian Conservation Corps Director James J. McEntee today authorized the furloughing of CCC enrollees to enable them to accept temporary jobs helping farmers and orchard operators in harvesting crops in states where labor shortages exist or are threatened. Mr. McEntee said the enrollees would be given temoprary leave without pay while they work as harvest hands. As the conclusion of their work, they will retirn to their camps. he explained. He emphasized that the harvesting work is “voluntary” on the part ofthe enrollees and assued the War Department that there would be “no exploitation” or attempt to use them to lower wage standards.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13.—Indiana exceeded the national average of 46.6 per cent in increased placements of Negro workers from January through May of this year as compared with 1940. The Indiana increase for the period was 51.9 per cent, according to a tabulation released by Federal Security Administrator Paul V. MecNutt. During the five-month period 5023 Negro workers were placed, this being 82 per cent of the total placements the McNutt report! shows.
