THE DEEP-THROATED rumble of the twin 12-cylindered motors under the speedboat hatch aft had changed hours ago to a smooth, powerful note of high exaltation. As soon as they had cleared the

outer harbor buoys at Bimini and]

headed in the general direction ofj Miami, Jamie had pushed over the throttle and the speedboat had eaped ahead like a tiger unleashed. ‘he salt spray, shimmering in the warm air and sunlig fanned back along the coaming on either side of the bow like wings “He's going to get us all kilt, that one,” Alvarado said to the girl, half an hour f Bimini. The mestizo had been sitting in the forward cockpit, scanning the blue horizon with Jamie's paid of Zeiss 9-power glasses. The smooth, with just enough add wings to the fiyi “Shut up, you Alvarado,” the girl told him quietly. “What do you want to shut me up for?” Alvarado said, feeling hurt and scared and wishing he was back at Mother Beam’s in Mimini. “It’s true, ain't it? The customs man said they were laying for us if we dared to make another run out of port. I dont want to get full of holes!”

JAMIE TOOK HIS gray. steady eves off the compass card for a long moment and flicked a disgusted look forward. He turned then and spat a wad of chewed tobacco into the boiling wake trailing behind like 8 ribbon of froth. He didn't answer “You won't get full of holes, Alrdo,” the girl told him, feeling lisgusted. “Don’t you think Jamie galues his skin too? Do you think he’s fixing to get his skin sieved by any slugs from anything?” Jamie, that one is a toughy! He don't care for any one thing, not even his skin!” the dark-skinned man forward insisted, most to himself. “You ain't ever going to find me running this stuff in again.” That was his reputation—being a toughy. Why, he had never killed anyone, or shot anyone, even. Seven years at this business, and he had never had puch trouble. His eyes squinted up at the sun. Two more hours of this and he would be rounding the south cove and running up alongside the mooring in the mangroves. Two more hours and he'd be going to meet the kids. The man who rented space on the boat could come and take out whatever he had had his agent in Bimini stow aboard. Jamie didn’t ask any questions about that, Just so he got paid. A man’s famfly must eat 2 2

THE PILOT EASED back a little on the throttle when he first saw the long object lying in the water about a league off, like a floating log. It wasn't a log, though. The gecond speedboat coughed into sound and cut diagonally across the course of their boat. All 40 knots, it didn't take long to meet. . ‘I told you! They're going to kill us all!” the brown man yelled when he saw them close on. The four men in the second boat sent a volley of fire across their bows with two machine guns. Jamie kept his course unswervingiy. “Get below, both of you,” Jamie gaid tersely, his jaws stopping their hewing motion and clamping in a tight grip. “This isn't the customs. This is Barrios cutthroats waiting to hijack us!” The gir] went below, the brown, quaking man following her into the small, low cabin forward. The sound of the motors, roaring full throated now just aft of them, prevented them from hearing what went on. Only when the sudden bright line of holes splintered in the mahogany of the hull over their ‘heads were they sure. Jamie was a toughy, all right. He would outrun ‘them guns or no guns! 2 = =

THE TWO BELOW were sudden‘ly flung to the floor as the speed- - boat heeled crazily and then righted itself at once. After that there was no more shooting. In 10 minutes the girl poked her head through the hatch. The sea was clear and Jamie was heading straight for the; Florida coast again. They pulled into the south cove just when Jamie had promised they ould. Alvarado stepped out into % the swamp ‘and eyed the raw bullet «Roles fearfully. Jamie sat there at : the wheel and tossed him a roll of . folding money. : “Youre a good boy, Alvarado. Only you've got a lot to learn. Maybe it’s the kind of people you came

The gray eyes flickered. “Not

tough, I only do what I gotta do.

I never carried a gun my life, like those bad ones!” “All right, then. You're not tough. Let's get going!” Jamie sat still in the stern. He spat out his tobacco deliberately. “You've got to help me,” he said “I picked up a slug in the shoulder and I—I can’t manage.” There was shame in his eyes. Shame at being so weak! “I know it,” said his wife.

HONEYWELL ESTATE

WABASH, Ind. Aug. 13 (U. P.).— Fabien Sevitzky, conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, yesterday directed the Indiana Youth Orchestra in a two-hour concert as part of an arts festival here. The T5-piece group, products of the Limberlost music camp at Lagrange, performed before 2000 on the estate of Mark C. Honeywell. Limberlost, first state organization of its kind, was founded in 1926 by J. W. Wainwright, a Ft. Wayne music instructor. : Mr. Sevitzky flew from Boston especially to direct the orchestra. Author Booth Tarkington was to have been a guest, but wired from Kennebunkport, Me, that considerations of health prevented his coming. The concert marked Indiana Symphony Orchestra Day at the Honeywell Festival. Tomorrow works of Indiana artists will be on exhibit.
