be made of phenolic plastics while they last. One manufacturer is making auto pistons of a new iron alloy with a ‘tin coating. Lead foil is replacing tin and aluminum, often with a paper coating to protect consumers against lead poisoning. Lead isn't used so much for ammunition in this war because so little shrapnel is used. Molybdenum is the big blessing. U. S. has 85% of the world's supply. It is used as a substitute for nickel and other steel alloys that are scarce. Moivbdenum gives steel the hardness provided by nickel or tungsten. Our tungsten has been coming from the Orient—a vulnerable supply source because of the warring Japanese. 8 2 2 DEFENSE BUSINESS has taken up so much space in Washington hotels that Leon Henderson asked hotel men to cancel convention bookings already made and to refuse future ones. Government and British agencies in the past few months have taken over hundreds of rooms and two entire hotels—the du Pont Circle and the Grafton—for office space. Mr. Henderson said conventions just made it harder on overcrowded restaurants, busy taxicabs and general congestion.

Convention business means $5,000,000 a year to the capital.
