VOICE from the Balcony by FREMONT POWER
PERHAPS GRAD SEARS, SALES chief for the brothers Warner, struck upon the correct solution when he told his men that the “only requirement for success in the campaign for single bills is good
pictures.”
good pictures would solve a lot of other problems,
Never the one for being stingy promised its exhibitors history of the company.’ is “Sergeant York,”
Simple, of course, but very sound. And for that matter,
too. with adjectives, Warner Bros. has
“the greatest production program in the Among the proclaimed ‘good pictures” which has been nationally released on a road
show basis with the following stipulations:
1. Fifty per cent of all net receipts must go back to Warners. 2. There shall be no doublefeaturing of the picture. i 3. The price scale shall be $1.10 | nights, 55 cents afternoon, 2§ cents for children and 55 cents nights and 40 cents afternoon for enlisted men 4. Theaters ordinarily giving only night performances must show “Sergeant York” also in the afternoons. 3. The movie is not to be shown at lower prices anywhere for the rest of the year.
®
And So—
UNDER THESE circumstances, ft appears doubtful there will be any great rush of Indianapolis exhibitors to show the movie. The feeling here is that there is no current film or any in the making that can equal “Gone With the Wind” in enough re- | spects to make high-priced road | shows profitable in this size city. But, of course, Warners has a number of other attractive items to put on the platter. This studio invaded Broadway last season with big talking money in hand and came away with several hit shows Some of those which we're to | gee in screen garb are “Arsenic and Old Lace,” to be directed by

Of course these are not all by any means. At least four of Warners’ 1941-42 productions will be of a biographical nature, which calls for the usual huge publicity buildups. When Eddie Cantor finishes the Broadway run of “Banjo Eyes,” which is about him, he'll star in the film version. Jesse Lasky has signed to produce “The Adventures of Mark Twain”; details will be forthcoming soon on “Rhapsody in Blue,” the life story of George Gershwin; Jim Cagney will star in the film on George M. Cohan, “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” and Errol Flynn has been chosen to be "Gentleman Jim” in “The Life of James J. Corbett.” Undoubtedly this latter picture
