NORWAY SHOWS SCORN OF NAZIS

Apparently, Even Fear Unwelcome German Guests.

By WILLIAM H. STONEMAN Copyrigh, 1941, by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News, Inc. LONDON, Aug. 4 —Declaration of a state of “civil emergency throughout Norway indicates that the Germans have something approaching a grand slam in the way of trouble throughout the conquered territories. The German move in Norway followed a series of unpleasant episodes all indicating that the Norwegians not only despise, but do not even fear their unwelcome guests. Details of the riot by 3000 Norwegians in Aalesund on the night of July 14-15 now have reached London and they indicate that both the Germans and their quislingite friends are having a nasty time.

Crowd Blocks Bridge

The riot was the result of a series of retaliations carried out by the Gestapo and German-controlled Norwegian police against the families of young Norwegians who had escaped to England. Seventy hosta largely of the fathers of people who had escaped were collared on an outlying farm

and brought to Aalesund to await transport to a concentration camp near Oslo. | The date of their departure was supposed to be a deep secret but when the Germans prepared to take them to the dock where they were to embark thev found a crowd of 5000 people filling the streets. When Lindheim, local quislingite police inspector, appeared the crowd greeted him with boos and whistles and then proceeded to block the bridge over which the prisoners had to pass. The Germans then summoned marines from a warship in the harbor and ther were promptly mobbed with stones and umbrellas.

Germans Change Tactics

The marines fired revolvers in the air without any result until one prisoner appeared and asked the crowd to be quiet in order to avoid bloodshed. He concluded by shouting “God save the King” and asking the people to sing the king's song. Everybody began to sing and cheer as the ship left. Lindheim was forced to hide in a local police station until the Gestapo had arrested 25 leading patriots The Germans have now taken to transporting only three or four hostages at a time in order to avoid similar demonstrations.

OLD DEFENSE ORDER IS PASSING FOR NEW

OGDEN, Utah (U. P.).—When the Federal Government took over a

large block of farm land near here to construct a 21-million-dollar general Army supply depot, the new defense order clashed with the old order of defense. One of the buildings on the tract was a log cabin, constructed in 1857 by Mormon pioneers. The old structure was complete, even had an iron door that the pioneers bolted each night as a protection against marauding Indians. However, the cabin was in the
