Cry of ‘Help’ Answered —But
EARL HOFF
RURNS CITY, Ind.—Once beautiful Greenwood Lake it now only half a lake—the bottom half. Also, it is an orphan with no one quite sure whether it belongs to the
State or the U. S. Navy.
Once the State has prospects of making Greenwood Lake into one of the best recreational areas in Indiana.
Now, fishermen mutter about the U. & Government trying to ruin their weekends and they go at their
sport as if thev were on: borowed time This is the story: The area was first developed by the U. 8 Depariment of Agriculture as a sub-marginal reclamation area. But this wasn't suecessful and the land was turned over to the Indiana Conservation Department Five years ago the Conservation Department began stocking the artificial Jake with Ash. Prospects for it becoming a southern Indiana recreational area were bright. Then trouble Appeared. Last summer the earthern part of the lake dam. a glacial formation, weakened and the dam had to be opened so repairs could be made From an 800-acre. four-mile long body of water. the lake shriveled to half its size. Only about 300 fish were removed. however Then came the bustle to rearm America and the Navy took over & huge area of land just south of the lake for an ammunition depot »

Fencing has been thrown up around the Navy area and at night giant focodlights illuminate the area with daytime brightness. Guards watch the gates. Inside mammoth buli-dozers push great piles of dirt around and workmen hammer on new buildings. The Navy fences do not extend to the lake. But on the south shore, high on the wooded siope, workmen are constructing homes for naval officers. It is reported there are to more than 20. he Navy has never made a formal declaration of whether it intends to take over the lake nor does the Conservation Department know Fishermen are fearful that the lake they now consider theirs may become a pleasure haven for
Naval personnel. Consequently,
they don’t know whether they will |
be able to fish in Greenwood Lake much longer. Greenwood Lake is only 80 miles from Indianapolis and 100 miles from Uouisville, Ky. The majority of fishermen there come from the South. You reach the lodge rin By Jim Marshall of Shoals

and head west over the old lake bed. You will find the boats rocking in what looks like a ditch and vou almost have to pole out into what is left of the lake, still a large body of water. Thick vegetation has grown over the dry part of the lake bed down to the water. Strange looking branches erop out of the water all over the lake. But there are fish there, big ones. Record catches of bass have been made in Greenwood Lake spring. We saw a string of eight, the largest about two and a half pounds, caught on surface plugs. We took along flv rods and hooked and released about 15 bluegills which were around six or seven inches in sige. The dam has been repaired and the fishermen are waiting now for rain to bring the level up. and hoping the Navy will stick to its ammunition business.
» » » NOBLE REED of The Times staff has just returned from MHiggins Lake, Mich, after hanging up a new record for perch at the lake. His 12-inch catch was judged to be the biggest caught on that lake and although there were no scales available, the weight was estimated around two pounds. He also caught a number of bass and great northern pike all on minnows. The largest bass was three pounds.
