» A NIGHT FIGHTER AIR- ' DROME, Somewhere in England, July 30.—You can see the coast of France from here on a clear day. But at night it is hard to tell whether it is land stretching away in the distance, or the sea, and it is at night principally that the boys fly the big, sinister, black Havocs (American DB-T's) This is one of the few places An Great Britain where the war

is almost never discussed. The peace, yes. We sat around until a very late hour waiting for a German attack that never mateerialized, and we discussed what we all wanted the world to look like, after the war. If it had not been for the bluegray uniforms, the living room of this former girls’ school might have been a room of any country house and its occupants a group of young college students. In the officers’ mess—which

was the girls’ sleeping quarters—

a placard remains which causes considerable amusement. It reads: “If you need a mistress during the night, please ring the bell.” & 8 # BEFORE THE LONG summer evening had merged into night, we went down to the airdrome to inspect the Havoc and Beau fighter planes, some of which had probably been chasing the Nazis away from London the night before. The airdrome officer for the

night was an “elderly” Canadian —an oid and seasoned pilot who had left a Canadian university to join up with the Royal Air Force in early 1939. He is one of the oldest of the squadron’s officers, at the age of 25. One of them had been over France and. after shooting down a Messerschmitt, found that the others in his group had gone off in pursuit of their quarry. So he ambled home—if you call 300 miles per hour ambling. But suddenly, in the distance, he saw

some ack-ack fire, so he headed for it. There seemed to be a bit of a fracas going on, so he entered into the spirit of it and joined in. When he returned and reported in, it turned out that he had been over Brest and that he had been in one of the better daylight raids on that port. ” ” ” WE FAILED TO SEE Havocs in action at night, owing to the remissness of the Germans in failing to attack Saturday night, but we got a slight demonstra-

tion of how they feel in the air. Sunday morning, three big Havocs taxied off the airdrome with their noses pointing out to sea. Sitting in the glass-enclosed nose of one, it was not difficult to imagine oneself about to sweep over France. When we did power-dive, it seemed like a triple roller coaster, but sheep down below evidently thought it was the Luftwaffe coming after them. During the dive my colleague did not appreciate the roller

coaster sensation at all, but he liked the landing better than I did. The glass nose, with the glass floor, seems to bring the ground up pretty suddenly. ” ” n

WE CELEBRATED OUR Havoc flight with a crack pilot of the squadron, whose 21st birthday it was. And it was like pulling teeth to get the boys to give us their records. They have a dozen Nazis to their credit, definitely, plus 16 probables, and 14 damaged. This record is probably very in-

accurate—in fact, it is very likely much higher than that. One of the jobs they do is to fly over France when the Ger=mans are over here. They “hang around” the German airdromes in France and await the return of the raiders. As the German landing lights go on, the Havocs go into action and catch the Nazis just as they think they are safe and sound and home again, The boys at “blank” squadron think the Havocs are grand mae chines.
