14.7 Per Cent Waste in Gasoline Use; Reduction Seen in Used Car Supply

MOTORISTS LAST YEAR consumed 22,000,000,000 gallons of gasoline and 14.7 per cent of this represents sheer waste. The AAA reports that the major waste cause which figuratively poured the 14.7 per cent down the drain was failure to maintain the vehicles in properly adjusted condition for fuel economy. In making the tests to determine the waste factor, the AAA proceeded on the assumption that the average car is about four years old. All tests were made by specialists from the Bureau of Standards. The report concludes “if every motor vehicle owner used 14.7 per cent less gasoline in 1940, he would, at the average prevailing price for the year, have saved $20 on gasoline, or enough gasoline to take him on a trip of 2000 miles.” “Applied to all motor vehicle owners, this would have meant a saving of $651,000,000, or gasoline enough for 60,000,000,000 additional miles.”

because automobile dealers will have fewer cars to sell and will give more attention to conditionihg used cars and satisfying used car customers,” he said.

LA PORTE TO EXPAND | WATER FACILITIES

LA PORTE, Ind, July 25 (U. P.). —The LaPorte City Board of Works |

yesterday filed application with the PWA for a $112,000 grant with which to increase the capacity of the municipal water works from 4,000,000 to 7,000,000 gallons daily. Water works superintendent Arthur Baker said the increased load on the water supply was caused by the defense housing area created by the Kingsbury ordnance plant. " Replacement and new machinery would be purchased and two emergency wells dug, Mr. Baker said.
