The first and most obvious method would be to invade Southwest China and cut the highway; but this would neces-| gitate many divisions of troops and | a long line of communications. A second possibility would be aj Japanese naval blockade of the Bur- | ma coast: but this would involve! halting and searching American and] British ships. To make it legal! would require a declaration of war on China. A third way would be to induce the British to close the highway as a gesture of appeasement to Japan; but the British say they are through with this kind of appeasement and do not wish to antagonize China nd the United States Finally, the Japanese could invade Burma: but that would mean war. Moreover, there are only two through roads between Thailand and Burma and none between IndoChina and Burma. Distances are great and the natural obstacles are numerous, including an 80-mile belt of forested mountains and two wide, swift rivers.

To see what the Japanese would be up against, I journeyed from Bangkok (Thailand) to Rangoon (Burma) over the seldom-used overland route. For a third of the 600-mile journey I traveled over the Siamese State Railways to Pitsnuloke, in the heart of Thailand. There I changed toc an American-

A two-wheeled cart, powered by a couple of huge but lethargic oxen, was waiting for me at the cow-pas-ture airport. It took as long to negotiate the three dusty, bumpy miles from Mesod to the frontier as it had taken to cover the entire 180 miles from Pitsnuloke. At the narrow river separating Thailand from Burma, I expected! to encounter sentries, customs examiners and barbed wire entanglements. There was nothing. It was the first international frontier I have ever crossed without a question asked. Mv half-naked. caramelcolored driver simply urged his team unceremoniously across the shallow stream and a few moments later we were parked in the single street of the Burmese jungle town of Menam Moei. The only other occupant of the street, besides an assortment of livestock, was a dilapidated truck. I approached its driver and gleaned, from his semi-intelligible English, that he was going my way. For an adequate consideration, I was provided with a place in the driver's seat. With 10 other less fortunate passengers — Indians, Burmans and Siamese — clinging precariously to our load, we rattled off toward Kawkareit, chief town of that border region.
