SOME RAILROAD EXECUTIVES AND UNION LEADERS in Indiana are at a loss to understand how 100,000 railroad workers can be transferred to the aireraft and shipbuilding industries. That is what the labor division of the Office of Production Management in Washington is asking.

OPM BACKS UP AUTO INDUSTRY
‘Henderson's 50 Per Cent Cut Will Not Be Invoked ‘immediately.’
WASHINGTON, July 24 (U. P). —The office of Production Management has assured the automo- { bile industry that it will not have to cut 1942 model production 50 per cent beginning Aug. 1, as tentatively scheduled by Price Administrator Leon Henderson, it was learned today. Assurances that drastic cuts would not be invoked were conveyed to the passenger car industry’s advisory committee at a meeting yesterday attended by

Governor Murray D. Van Waggoner of Michigan, who protested any drastic curtailment of auto output because of its effect on employment. The manufacturers were told that raw materials scheduled for delivery during August and September would be available to prevent widespread unemployment of automobile workers, officials said.
Other Products Affected
The original OPM 20 per cent cut will be effected, it was said, but Mr. Henderson's ‘entative plan calling for a 50 per cent reduction for all consumer durable goods

Similarly, OPM officials said that cuts ranging from 30 to 50 per cent] in the production of mechanical refrigerators, household laundry | equipment, air conditioning, heating {and cooking equipment, metal fur{niture and miscellaneous appliances, ‘as proposed by Mr. Henderson, { would not be invoked beginning in | August.
Henderson Non-Committal
Mr. Henderson told the United |Press that he had conferred today {with OPM Director William S. Knudsen about the cut. But when he was asked about their differences of opinion regarding reduction of {output in dursble goods industries {he replied: “No comment.” OPM and OPACS officials said they both have submitted plans to the White House to eliminate “overlapping” authority of the agencies. Mr. Roosevelt is expected to establish clearly the extent to which defense production will be given priority over civilian needs. Legal experts said priorities powers given him by the recently enacted Vinson bill are sufficient for enforcement of any curtailment program he may adopt.
HOT WEATHER AIDS WHEAT PRICE RISE
CHICAGO, July 24 (U. P).— Wheat futures worked higher on the Chicago Board of Trade today after a quiet and rather colorless start. At the end of the first hour wheat was 3% to 3% cent a bushel higher with September at $1.05%5%. Corn was up 4 to 1: cent. 3: to !2 cent higher. Rye up 1 to 11% cents. Soy beans were 1: to 1 cent higher. Talk of improvement
in the threat of hot weather in the spring wheat area influenced sentiment sufficiently to bring about an upward movement.

Railroad Gets
TRENTON, N. J., July 24 (U. P). —Under the new railroad tax program, it was disclosed today, the Lehigh Valley Railroad system in New Jersey will have to pay $4,224,58790 in delinquent taxes during the next five years but will be absolved of $2,256,008.14 in accumulated interest and penalties. The yesterday when Governor Charles Edison, with whose approval the Legislature enacted the program despite the opposition of Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey City, signed the four measures incorporating it. The program calls for payment without interest or penalty of $34,000,000 in back taxes and revises the tax structure to take into account the ability of the railroads to ay. Henceforth railroads will pay a
worth of property in the state and an additional franchise tax each
the previous year.
for the payment of back taxes in annual ranging from two to 20 years, depending on the carriers’ ability to pay. In the case of the Lehigh Valley, the period was set at five years.
POWER & LIGHT NET ALMOST UNGHANGED
Indianapolis Power & Light Co. reported today that its profit in the past three months was almost the same as it was in the same three months of last year. Its income was higher but its expenses mounted also.
Consolidated net income, including its subsidiaries, Mooresville Public Service Co. and Electric Building Co., Inc, was $474,824 in the three months ending June 30. This compares with $473,617 in the similar three months of 1940. For the 12 months ended June 30, consolidated net income was $3,037,707 compared with $2,335,260 for the 12 months ended June 30 last year. However, the report showed that $695,000 of this year’s increase in net income was due to Federal income tax deductions obtained because of the company’s refinancing of its funded debt last year. Revenues obtained from sale of electricity, water, steam and from rents in the Electric Building were $3,259,969 for ‘the past three months, compared with $2,966,898 in the second quarter last year. For the 12month period operating revenues were $13564,454 compared with 812371919 in the 12 months ended June 30, 1940. Operating expenses and taxes, exclusive of Federal income taxes, also were higher, the report showed. Operating expenses and taxes for the past three months were $2,122 - 298 compared with $1,888913 in the similar three months of last year. For the past 12 months they were 1188411018 compared with $7.717,174 for the 12 months ended June 30, 1940.
