Thomson Looks Good at St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. July 24 (U. P.). —Two sub-par practice rounds boosted long-hitting Jimmy Thomson today into the group of favorites in the annual St. Paul Open Golf Tournament. Among 200 professionals and amateurs testing the tricky Keller Course before tomorrow's initial round, Thomson carded a four under par #8 yesterday to pair with a score of 68 for Tuesday's trial. Others cracking par in the pretourney rounds were Jimmy Hines and Sammy Snead. Hines posted a 69 yesterday and a 68 Tuesday. Snead shot a 68 for his first round. It is true that Big Pebble got nowhere in particular in Bradley's famous silks, but the colonel knew the colt was cut out to be a fine distance performer. Big Pebble is by Black Servant and out of Beach Talk, she by Sundridge. It was because he had great faith in Big Pebble that Col Bradley urged his long-time friend, Edward S. Moore, to buy him for a nominal sum on the eve of the 1940 running of the $50,000 Widener Cup. As a breeder and large stockholder in tracks, it is good business for Col. Bradley to keep immensely wealthy men like Eddie Moore enthused about runners. Moore's horses weren't much. Col. Bradley wanted him to have one of class. = » ”

MOORE, who breeds cattle near Cheyenne, Wyo., and his trainer, Bill Finnegan, knew Big Pebble was handicapped by shelly hoofs. Finnegan, one of the more resourceful handlers, also knew how to ease the pressure on them. He had Big Pebble run with mud corks on a fast track. A claim of foul had to go against Big Pebble before Many Stings was officially declared the winner of the ’40 Widener, and Moore was so pleased with his colt’s showing that he named his palatial] yacht, recently turned over to the government, after the brown stretch- | burner.
