(Fremont Power is on Vacation)
HOLLYWOOD, July 23 (U. P.)— Wander around the studios . for a time and you will be inclined to agree with Director Edward Dmytryk when he says that the prettiest girls in Hollywood are not on the star lists. ; 1 “A girl,” said Dmytryk, “has to * have much more than mere loveliness to make a name for herself} on the screen. She has to have tal- : ent, and intelligence and a certain +. driving ambition which will permit : her to keep on despite disappoint-| 1 " ments and <heartbreaks which are _ part of every young player's ca- “ reer.”

review because I only take the paper for Pegler and Joe Wiljams.” “What kind of a fellow is this Walter Whitworth . . . Corbin Patrick . . . Herb Kenney?” “Dear Sir: I am writing a thesis on the cinema for graduation, Would you be good enough to write me your opinion of it... about 5000 words?” “Any time you get some extra passes to the Circle you don’t know what to do with, give me a ring.” “What you need is a good poke in the nose.” “Of course, the critics kill all the good shows.” “Have you got a coupla ducats to the Lyric handy? - I heard it was pretty good.” “I never saw such stuff in all my life, and if I hadn't paid road-show prices to see it I wouldn’t have sat through it. You ought to be horsewhipped for recommending it.” “Do you need an assistant?” “It is perfectly obvious that you know nothing at all about the movies.” “So ‘you liked ‘Citizen Kane. Guess you've gone over to the Communists.” “How do you go about getting a job as a movie critic? I am very much interested in the theater and am inclosing a write-up-I did of Hellzapoppin for the Corn Center High School Tassel.” t “I am. very anxious to ,meet Jerry Corona, or Jerry Colonna, whichever is the actor.” © “Howzabout two ‘for my neigh= borhood house tonight? Can do? Of course, I don’t want to put you to any trouble, but—" “What a soft job. Nothing to do but—" Boy! Bring me an aspirin, Bet ter make it three!

> Dmytryk, currently directing Co- * lumbia’s “The Blonde From Singapore,” with Florence Rice, Leif Erickson, Gordon Jones and Adele Rowland, points to the hundreds of ¥ beautiful extras who have never been able to make further progress. “I've seen more beautiful women in dress extra scenes than I've seen '. on the star list,” he said. “Once in a while I become curious about these girls and talk to them in an effort to find out what's keeping their names out of lights. Many, I find, lack both intelligence and ambition. “Please understand, I'm not running down the extras. I only feel sorry for hundreds of beautiful girls who seemingly have everything to offer but don’t know how to use it. Often you’ll learn that they didn’t finish high school, or if they did, it was under pressure.” Sometimes, he. said, a gorgeous extra will lose much of her beauty when she starts talking—a picturetype who looks pretty only when she isn’t doing much of anything or making an effort to think. “Charm and personality, both of - which are needed in large quan- -. tities for picture success,” he said, “are found only in those girls who also are intelligent.”

IT WAS INEVITABLE that the Hollywood publicity hounds would capitalize on the Gen. Lear episode. Remember Clara Bow, the “If” girl? Then there was Ann Sheridan and her “Ooomph.” Lana Turner was the “Sweater” gixl Carol Landis became the epitome of “ping.” And now , Patricia Dane, one of the “Ziegfeld Girl” lovelies, has been nicknamed the “Yoo Hoo” girl in time to grab some newspaper space before the release of “Life Begins for Andy Hardy,” in which she's a sizzling siren. : ”

Texas 'Province'
Draws Chuckle
OTTAWA, July 23 (U. P.).—Those who have seen the rushes were chuckling today over the lines spoken by Air Marshal William A. (Billy) Bishop, Canada’s number one World War Ace, who appears in the Warner Bros. film, “Captains of the Clouds,” in production here. Marshal Bishop in the picture is| inspecting a column of graduating student fliers and as he passes, he inquires from what provinces they have come. “Ontario,” one says, “Manitoba” and “Quebec” others respond. He pauses before one husky lad, who replies to the question: “Texas, sir.” “One of our best provinces,” Marshal Bishop replies. ’
Conn Is Movie Problem Child
HOLLYWOOD, July 23 (U. P.).— Prizefighter Billy Conn observed the passing of his first week as an actor today with the remark: “I'd rather fight Joe Louis twice than act once.” Conn was a problem to directqys of “The Pittsburgh Kid,” in which he is appearing with actress Jean Parker at Republic Studio. The first day or two, he mumbled his lines, and his voice trailed off at the end of each sentence. By giving him only a couple of sentences, directors finally managed to get by with five shootings for each take.
