~ SHOWS HUGE GAIN
| Uirezess Ranging From 1
to 40 Per Cent Reported by
Indiana Tax Board for All Farm Animals Except Horses and Mules.
The Indiana farmer can now “look down his shoulder” at the businessman who thinks a 10 per cent increase, in the value of his investment during a single year is the acme
of success.
For, during the past year, the value of all farm animals, " except horses and mules, has increased from 11 to 40 per
cent, the State Tax Board reported today.
The State Board averaged the as-
sessments of farm animals made by all assessors in the state and re- . ported that the average farm sow, which only a few years ago was
"hardly worth feeding slop to, is to-
day worth $21 cash. In 1940, the average sow was worth only $15.
Poultry Class Up
Thus, within a year the value of each sow went up 40 per cent, Other hogs, and poultry, increased 25 per cent in value, both jumping from $4 to $5 each during the year. Sheep increased 16 per cent and milk cows 11 per cent in value during the year. he upward swing in the values of livestock is, of course, directly attributable to the defense program, state officials said. Horses and mules have decreased in value since there is comparatively little need for them either on the farm or in the defense program. Below is a chart which shows the values of farm animals during the De few years: 1940 1941 $43 $48 25 29
48 56 Farm Implements Increase The assessment figures fixed by the assessors are supposed to be the actual cash value of the animals appraised. The Tax Board reported that during the past year the value of the average farm implement increased from $128 to $132. This shows that more new farm implements were purchased. On the other hand, Tax Board officials said the value of the average tractor dropped from $220 to $211, indicating that farmers are keeping their old tractors.

OPINION BAGKS DAYLIGHT TIME
Surveys Sov Majorities Favor FDR Plan in "AH Areas.
By DR. GEORGE GALLUP Director, American Institute of Public’ ’ Opinion PRINCETON; N. J. July 23. — President Roosevelt's request to Congress for legislation to provide daylight saving time likely will receive widespread support from the voters of the country. In. three separate . surveys since 1937 the Institute has found consistent majorities in favor of daylight saving, and the most recent survey, com=pleted only a short time before the President's re-
Be
quest to Congress, indicates that
every section of the country is ip favor of summer daylight saving time in the present emergency. The President singled out the Southeastern States as one area in which he felt daylight time was particularly .needed and sent letters to the governors of eight Southern States.
in the Southern States as a whole are more than 60 per cent in favor of daylight time until the days begin to shorten in the autumn. Moreover, nearly half of the voters in that same section are in favor of adopting daylight saving time the year ‘round. ‘The sectional vote in the Institute’s survey on daylight time are as follows: “To save electricity and to increase daylight working hours, it has been suggested that the entire country be put on daylight saving time until the end of September. Do you favor or oppose this suggestion?” ’ Op- No
