Williams Forecasts Post-War Autos With Entire Bodies, Fenders and Instrument Boards Made : Of Revolutionary Substance.

By MAJOR AL WILLIAMS Times Aviation Editor

PITTSBURGH, July 23.—The marvelous progress being made with development of plastics and molded, laminated wood processes for the aviation industry provides strong

reason for believing that the next full-out production of auto-] mobiles will find wood and plastic molded wood replacingi}

steel in some startling fashions. v

For cheapness, lighter|

weight and lower production costs there is no technical objection to- making entire bodies, fenders and instrument

boards of motor cars of plastically treated wood. The coming pause n motor car production, .dué to war emergency, is being regarded as an all-around opportunity for the automobile industry to revamp and effect manufacturing changes it has been coni templating for some time.

Of course, there is no secret about the location of our Army and Navy flying fields and air bases. In fact, there’s-nothing secret about the exact location, including street numbers, and the sizes of our major aircraft and engine factories. ' Chambers of commerce have attended to spreading that information. I supthe Japanese and Germans and, .in fact, anyone here or abroad who wanted this information ‘has - it : . already. Maj. Williams In spite of repeated warnings from airmen not in the military services, old and new air bases in alarming numbers sre located so near the Atlantic coastline that they could be readily shelled by hostile warships. Hostile warships other than submarines, of course, will never get close to the United States as long as we have any bombers left. < ~The Army and Navy air bases how used as main operation fields should be designated immediately as. mission fields, with the major bases farther inland. Talking of airdromes and airports, it’s no secret that those great airports recently built and completed have cost fantastic prices. " La Guardia Field, New York, is reported to have cost about 50 million dollars. (For 17 million the Canadian Government built fields for the Trans-Canadian Airways from the Atlantic to the Pacific.)

I am informed that La Guardia— waggishly called “La Charga” Field because of the heavy landing ‘fees charged for lighting there—bids of 33 to 37 cents per cubic yard were offered to the City of New York to haul the earth for the building of this field. They decided to do the job the WPA way, and the earth was hauled at about three dollars per cubic yard. on » os

We may be much nearer than we think to complete control of all oceans by airpower. ‘I cannot guarantee the following long - range flight A performance estimates, but they were collected by ‘a reliable foreign aeronautical source. This safe air cruiser is reputed to hold the present world’s distance record for carrying bombs in a closed - course flight — 7037 miles. Carrying 1000-pound bombs, the Germans are reported to have three types of long-range bombers: (1) The Heinkel “He-177"—7040 miles at 180 miles an hour in 39 hours; (2) the “Ju-88” (Junkers)—4800 miles at 200 miles an hour in 24%; hours; (3) the “Do-26" (Dornier)— 5100 miles at 140 miles an hour in 36% hours,
