Way Back to Civil “War Days for Donations Of Defense Metals.
From Civil War days and from the U. S. Army, itself of World ~ War I came contributions of aluminum yesterday, the first full day of Indianapolis’ drive for utensils and objects made of the metal, Some one turned in a couple of aluminum umbrella frame works of Civil War vintage to Station 28 at 512 Maple Road. Other, and less spectacular, pieces made a consid‘erable pile there. ‘At Station 14, 30th St. and Ken- ~ Wood Ave, nearly a dozen alum_inum canteens, carried by soldiers of the last war, were turned in. ‘Boy Scouts and the members of the Federation of Jewish Women’s Clubs canvassed the neighborhood of Station 16, 5555 N. Illinois St., and turned in a sizable pile. One item was an aluminum weight reducing exerciser. “A large assortment of balls of aluminum foil was turned in at the Sears Gasoline Station, near Sears, Roebuck & Co. store, and Boy and . Girl Scouts collected a large pile at the Shell Gas Station, 46th and
EXPLOSIVE RIVET MAY SPEED PLANES
NEW YORK, July 23 (U. P.).— The American Chemical Society reported today the development of an “entirely new type” of explosive rivet which “may prove an important factor in speeding’ American aircraft production and simplifying “design.” The new rivet was described in a research report to the society by Dr. D. L. Lewis Jr. of the E. I. du Pont De Nemours & Co. “A high explosive is secreted in a cavity at fhe end of the shank,” the report said “Heat applied to the rivet head by an electric gun . détonates the charge. The explosion expands the charged end of the shank, forming a ‘blind’ head and settipg the rivet. “Under the best mechanical methods now: employed, a skilled workman can set about two to four of these ‘blind’ fasteners a minute after they have been placed in the holes. The new rivets may be installed by one workman at a rate of 15 to 20 rivets a minute, once they are in place.”

Action of the Federal Communications. Commission in postponing from July 30 to Sept. 16 the date for making effective its order that the National Broadcasting Company dispose of one of its networks apparently won’t have any effect on moving up the opening day for WISH, Indianapolis’ new station. WISH is to be a Blue network affiliate and the nounced that if it has to cut away from one of its networks it will be the Blue. There had been speculation that possibly the FCC order had something to do with holding up operation of the local station but this was denied by WISH officials. At the studio it was said that they are only waiting on word from the FCC to start operation and WISH engineers are now in the capital submitting technical information, according to President C. B. McConnell. WISH officials said ’ there was a possibility that they would go on the air Saturday night, but this is not definite. Delays so far have been due mostly to defense priorities. which delayed necessary equipment but all equipment now has been installed and tested and the station is ready to go. #8 8 William Behrman of Indianapolis, formerly connected with Station WKBF, predecessor to WIRE, is to be station manager of WISH.

According to the United Press the FCC postponement was made on_a petition filed yesterday by the NBC. The commission explained thatthe postponement, was granted in order to continue conferences between the
—| commission and the major broad-
casting systems -on problems involved in the order which changes chain. broadcasting drastically. The Columbia Broadcasting System also petitioned for a delay in the effective date of the order.
