tion to make money from the business

larly freight business, is improving is shown in The Indianapolis : Times BusiRoger Budrow ness Sume mary. Inbound freight carloadings last week totaled 4812 cars. Thus far this year the 100,327 cars represents a 16.7 per cent Increase over last year thus far. Outbound freight carloadings show an even better increase. The 60,884 cars thus far this year represent a 24.1 per cent increase over last year at this time. Men connected with several of the railroads serving Indianapolis report that the great portion of their business is still what ‘they call “ordinary freight” as ' compared with strictly “defense business.” The defense boom has put more money in the public pocketbook, stimulating buying and thus shipping of “ordinary goods.” But they expect to be shipping more defense goods and possibly less ordinary goods soon because “of the restricting of civilian manufacturing in favor of defense manufacturing, as in the case of automobiles. Another reason for the large increase in freight business is shown in the grain receipts here last week, as reported by the Indianapolis Board of Trade. More than a-million bushels of wheat were shipped to Indianapoli® last week as Indiana's bumper harvest got underway. Grain receipts here this year are 65 per cent ahead of last year at this time.

STATE ALLOTED TENANT MONEY

Indiana’s Share for [Farm ‘Purchase Tentatively Set at $939,065.

Times Special WASHINGTON, July 22.—A tentative allocation of $939,065 was announced today as Indiana's share in the $50,000,000 available for loans to help tenants buy farms under the Farm Security Administration during the fiscal year 1941-42. Under the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act, the distribution of funds is based upon farm population and the prevalency of ‘tenancy in the various states. About 9000 tenant families. will |obtain such purchase loans’ during the year. Approximately 21,000 farm families have been helped in this manner by June 30, 1941. The average cost of farms purchased so far under the program has been about $4200, with an additional average expenditure of approximately $1500 for land improvement, houses and farm buildings. Farms so far selected average 135 acres ‘in size. Almost 9000 new dwelling loans of about $1400 apiece have been made to tenant purchase

farmers. ‘

SPAIN LETS FOREIGN

BANKS GLOSE DOORS

MADRID, July 22 (U. P.).—Foreign banks will be permitted to close any or all offices in Spain and turn their accounts over to Spanish banks of their own choosing, under a new law published in the official bulletin today. : Previously Spanish law had prevented foreign banking institutions from closing any of their offices in this country even though lack of business warranted their discontinuance. Some American and British banks with offices here are expected to take advantage of the new law at once. It has been known for some time that the Royal Bank of Canada and the International Banking Corp. (United States) have been working on: arrangements to close their Barrcelona branches but were unable to
