By Science Service WASHINGTON, July 18—A new rot-proofing treatment for fabrics, expected to be useful in defense as well as peacetime applications, has been invented by a woman chemist the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Helen M. Robinson of the Bureau of Home Economics. Miss Robinson’s process is covered by a public service patent, so that it may be used freely by anyone, on a nonexclusive basis. : The process consists in immersing the fabric first in a solution of a copper or cadmium salt, then in a solution of morpholine; which is a complex organic compound. The reaction takes place within the fibers of the fabric itself, thoroughly impregnating it and discouraging

validism as well as many deaths and that there is some hope that they may be conquered eventually by a sulfa drug, though chemists may have to make new ones to accomplish this. : The hope for chemical conquest | of tuberculosis is strengthened by the latest reporf, of a new drug called promin, which has shown considerable promise as a remedy for experimental tuberculosis in guinea pigs. Although the same germs that cause tuberculosis in humans caused the infection in the laboratory: animals, guinea pigs with tuberculosis present. quite a different problem from men and women sick with the Great White Plague. Scientists, therefore, caution against expecting too much in the way of a chemical cure for human tuberculosis on the basis of the results in guinea pigs achieved by promin treatment,

THE EXACT CAUSE of rheumatic fever is not known, although many scientists believe it to be a streptococcus. The disease, which sometimes gives the symptoms familiar to the laymen as St. Vitus’ dance, attacks children chiefly, damaging their hearts and generally dooming them to many years of invalid existence, if not killing them outright. Patients with rheumatic fever are subject to second and third attacks, each of which is likely to cause still more damage to the heart. The disease is said to be responsible for at least 30,000 deaths annually in the United States.

A record of no attacks among 55 patients while taking continuous sulfanilamide treatment from November through June, the rheumatic fever season, each year between 1936 and 1940 has recently been reported, while during the same four years, 16 major attacks of rheumatic fever occurred among 150 patients ‘not taking the sulfanilamide treatment.
