‘America’ s Most Trapshooter’ Is

Times Special FRENCH LICK SPRINGS, Ind, July 17.—Blasting his way back in an avowed attempt to regain the laurels he won in 1939 when he won the Grand American All-Around Championship with a record-shat-tering total of 880 out of 900 targets, comes Phil Miller of French Lick Springs, recently named “Americh’s most colorful trapshooter.”

Sunday has been set aside by a committee of businessmen and friends as “Ben Kelley Day” at the Beech Grove baseball park in honor ‘of the veteran manager. Kelley, who has. been active in amateur baseball ranks in the city as player, manager and promoter for 28 years, threatens to retire at the end of the season. He is at present the manager of the Beech Grove team. His Beech Grove team has suffered only one defeat this season. Herb Pflum, chairman of the arrangements committee, asks all of Kelley's friends to bring their cars and meet in front of his store at Bethel and Raymond St. at 1:30 p. m. to take part in the parade to the park. The Beech Grove team will play the New Palestine team on this day. Prizes donated by merchants will be awarded the Bee¢h Grove

the Grand American All-Around title with 939 out of 1000, the Jim Day Cup with 456 out of 500, the 16-yard champienship with 194 out of 200, and the Class A title with 195 out of 200, the French Lick sharpshooter. has been strictly the man to beat in any competition. One of his greatest feats in those days was his incredible run of 391 in a row in the Oklahoma State shoot of 1922, and he collected the National Handicap High Average title the same year with a percentage of .9355 on 1,350 registered targets. This marked the first and only time that a trapshooter was able fo win the high average title from the-distance of 23 yards, from which Miller shot all his clays in those days. . In 1924 Miller broke the world’s record by ‘breaking 100 consecutive targets from the 25-yard mark, at Clarksdale, Miss. He ran 118 in a row before missirig. The same year in the Grand American at Chicago he won the Amateur Clay Target title with 199 out of 200, the Jim Day Cup with 471 out of 500, the doubles with 181 cut of 200, the 16yard targets with 593 out of 600, and} won the National High Average Championship for the year with a percentage of 9823 on 2550 clays. Following a period of several years when he competed only in scattered meets here and there, Miller returned to the big time in 1937 with a tie in the Grand American doubles and won the Amateur Clay Target championship with 200 straight. In 1938 the eagle eye of the French Lick gunner began to return in earnest as he walked off with the Indiana State Championship with 200 straight and captured the entire program with 450 straight! He collected the National High Average title with the astonishing percentage of 9898 on 3050 clays. Miller continued his accurate shooting in 1939, winning the Grand American All-Around Championship with 880 out of 900. He broke 98 out of 100 in each competition, broke 128 straight, a new Grand American record, and as a crowning honor he was named captain of the 1940 All-American team. In the 1940 meet at Vandalia Miller was sadly off his game and finished well down in the list. This year will be different, if you can figure on the basis of the few events he has entered. In the last few weeks Phil broke every target in two events in which he competed and it is apparent that -the old refrain of “There’s Phil Miller, you have to beat him to win,” will again
