PASTORS PRESS MARIJUANA WAR
"Church Group Asks State to Continue Fight on Narcotic Weed.
A plea that State officials continue the fight against marijuana was ' forwarded to Gov. Schricker today by the Cnurch Federation of Indianapolis. Asserting that with the discontinuance of the State Narcotics Commission July 1 no State agency is maintaining the fight against the weed, the Federation's executive committee met at the Y. M. C. A. yesterday and asked the Governor: 1. To make every effort to curb the cultivation of the weed. . . 2 To use his executive office to keep alive the war on the drug traffic. The Federation's social action committee was instructed to advise State officials of the Federation's wish that no retrenchment in the general fight against narcotics be permitted. Dr. Howard J. Baumgartel, executive secretary of the Federation, was instrucfed to write a letter to the Governor outlining the group’s position on marijuana enforcement. Dr. Baumgartel’s letter said in part: “Our committee was of the unanimous opinion that this is a tragic situation and we were asked to impart to you the request of the committee that every. effort be made to curb the cultivation and use of marijuana throughout the State. “We do not know what funds are available, but we are sure of your sympathetic interegt and petition you to use your execytive office to help eradicate and curb the use of marijunana.’
Plan Christian Missions In 200 U. S. Cities
In a report to the Federation Executive Committee, Dr. Baumgartel said: “We are deeply concerned that secularism is struggling against the right to determine what religious and social forces are to shape and determine community life.” ‘He reported that the Federal Council of Churches last year conducted 22 national Christian Missions in large cities with 200 planned in smaller cities for this year. “The clergy and laity of the Protestant churches are aroused,” he asserted. At the meeting ‘the committee approved re-incorporation of the Federation to comply with state laws so that a new constitution may be adopted at a called meeting later.

Farm Thrives,
Feeds Raw Corn to Children
NOWATA, Okla., July 15 (U. P.).—A farm woman living near here often fed her 10 children nothing but raw cracked corn al-
though she had a good income from a large, well-equipped farm, County Attorngy Delos Tillotson said today. “The idea appeared to be to save every ‘dime they could,” he said: “Neighbors complained to me that the kids—who were as wild as rabbits—have been coming around to their houses begging for food. The children said their mother had quit. feeding them or fed them nothing but the corn.” He said three of the children had been ‘sent to an institution at Enid, Okla. and that “three more have been signed up to go,” Before the death of the husband and father last February, Tillotson said, the family lived in “a, sort of bomb shelter” or con-

crete dugout on their 100-acre
farm. . . “They had a fine farm,”. he said. “They had more farming equipment than I've seen in a long time. They had § tractor, good teams, thirty head of fine milk cows, and plenty of chickens. “They used to run shelled corn through an old coffee grinder and eat the coarse meal uncooked. The neighbors said they had to feed -the children quite often. “After the father died, his wife carried on just about as before,
been built over the dugout. “In addition to her farm income, the woman must have a cash income of $10 or $15 a week, but I'm told" that she saves a substantial part of that and buys groceries only after the savings have been taken out.” Tillotson plans to investigate the case further.

DISPLEASED BY ‘NO SHOOTING
National Defense Comittee “Not Encouraged’ by Knox Statement.
Knox’ statement that there has|iosT been no “shooting” by the United States has been termed as “not encouraging” by the Indiana Commit tee for National Defense. The committee in a statement issued today said in part: “It may be that the Secretary’s testimony pleased a few isolations
please the majority of the American people. Today, many Americans are asking: ‘Why has there been no shooting?’ : “Doubtless the fact that there has not been any shooting explains why
we are sending to Britain under the Lend-Lease law is going to the bottom of the Atlantic. “We hope that it will not be many days before Secretary Knox can report that our Navy is doing a real job in the Atlantic; the job that he has urged that it do—clear the Atlantic. Let the isolationist minority roar.”
triotic Americans have. a right to demand that leading isolationist Senators stop sabotaging our national defense. No one questions their right to argue in favor of their own conception of foreign policy when that policy is being debated. “But when the United States Navy takes action in the national defense, as in the case of Iceland, political opposition which jeopardizes its success passes beyond politics and borders upon treason. “Senator Wheeler's action in the world and Mr. Hitler that the United ‘States was going to occupy Iceland will be thus regarded by the vast majority of Americans. “With the access to military secrets which he has evidently gained, Senator Wheeler must have realized the vulnerability of Iceland to a large-scale ‘German attack.”
