Follow: Aluminum Collection
By ROGER BUDROW
. AFTER THE ALUMINUM POTS AND PANS cam- . paign, it will probably be iron, steel, brass, manganese, lead ‘and any other metal badly needed for rearmament. Defense officials in’ Washington are hinting that a house-to-house *. canvas will be made in August for these metals. oi Two Indiana companies, incidentally, are on the Government approved list of smelters eligible to buy your old
aigminum from the local aluminum collection.
They are
American Smelting & Refining at Whiting and u. 8. Re-
duction at East Chicago.
' There probably will be a good deal of guessing just how many pounds of aluminum will be in that pile on the World War Memorial Plaza after the] collection "starts a week from Monday. In the test campaigns at Richmond, Va. and Madison, Wis., it was found that a stack 18 feet by 36 feet by 6 feet will hold about 36,000 pounds of aluminum. There . Roger Budrow wol't. be = any chicken wire bin on the Plaza col“lection here but just a natural pile. ‘But with a little mathematics, the poundage can be figured out ahead of actual weighing. The money from sale of this scrap. aluminum will go to the Civilian Defense office head by Mayor La ‘Guardia of New York. What this will be used for, Mayor La Guardia hasn’t announced yet. The aluminum will be divided . into two groups, the wrought alumjnum made from sheet metal, and cast! aluminum made mostly of an alloy containing 5 per cent silicon. After it reaches the smelters, the Army and Navy will decide what it can be used for. Virgin aluminum is preferred for most of the defense Deady Bi; Shere are parts of airplanes, shell 1uses, ‘bomb fuses, battleships, tanks and so on that can use some of this scrap aluminum. The national committee promises: that all of it will be used in some way for defense
purposes. TPO »
« ELEVEN OF THE 17 major ‘ Hoosier farm commodities rose in - price during June, two were unchanged, and only four—rye, horses, calves and sheep—were lower in price and not nfuch at that, Purdue "University reports. The purchasing power of Indiana farm products, using the years between 1910 and 1914 as an average of 100, is now 95° compared to 94 for the nation as a whole. Indiana farm prices, taken together, are now the highest they've been since October, 1937: » $n ODDS AND ENDS: Glass manufacturers are busiest in history (May output. of glass containers, was highest ever) because defense ficials have clamped down on using
tin for containers. . . . Mexican in- {comm
dustrialists ‘have asked their Gov.ernment to prevent export of 125,000 bales of cotton to U. S. because they will need it themselves. ... The Government is moving all its corn ‘from Iowa into Chicago and Mil- . waukee to replace corn moved eastward from Chicago. . . . Montgomery
. Ward- now requires refrigerators, M
- washers, stoves and radios to be paid for in 24 months instead of the 27 to 30 months a year ago. . .. The
New York Stock Exchange recom-| ood - mends that corporations, in making Cutte
‘out their earnings statements, keep Pederal tax provisions separate earned income. Stocks of ies making farm “machinery (International Harvester, J. I. Case, etc) were given a whirl upward yesterday because of the outlook for bigger sales to farmers who will profit by higher prices and bumper crops.
INDIANA UTILITY
- STOCKS UP SHARPLY 32
A sharp advance was made by .'stocks of Public Service Co. of Indiana and Central Indiana Power Co. in local quotations today. The advance was in response to Federal Court approval in Delaware | yesterday to the voting plans of the Midland United Co. trustee, holder of a majority of the utilities’ common stock. This was regarded as clearing the way for the merger which has been delayed several months, pending the court decision. Stockholders are to meet here Tuesday. Central Indiana Power 7% preferred stock rose nearly six points while Public Service Co. of Indiana 6% preferred rose nearly seven points and the 7% preferred eight] points. Terre Haute Electric 5% pre-
ferred, the other utility in the mer- A
ger, rose only: a point,
